SuperRallyRoo
So I passed idle CO with flying colors! but failed cruise emissions. So what does this mean? How would i fix the problem? I have done everything... Plug wires and plugs, new oil, new gas, good filter, it was hot, its leaned out as far as the hitachi will go. I ran 87 octane... I was going to take it to the emissions specialist but he seemed to want to take a few days off when I was ready to have it pass and he wasted my trip permit for me. heh. Anyway the car runs great and it gets like 30mpg in the city! I'm just at a loss of how to tune it any better. It will idle at 610rpms great. We did the timing at about 200rpms we could see the words on the belts as they went by. Any ideas? New air filter? What would trying it with no air filter do? GLCraig
did you take it for a long enough of a dive to get the cat good and hot before taking the test?
SuperRallyRoo
Ya it was so hot it overheated the first time and sprayed antifreeze all over the ground! I wish they would let u stay in the car cause I want to monitor the gauges! It was on H. Fan thermo switch failed.
edrach
A tip: set the timing and idle at 700 to 800 rpm with the vac. advance dis-engaged and the hose plugged. When you're done with that set the idle to 800 to 1000 rpm; even though you didn't fail at idle, the higher the idle the more likely you are to pass at idle. Nextly, does your vacuum advance work? If not, it should be fixed; I don't know if that affects CO or not, but it should be working. Fix the thermo switch on the fan. An the cat should be hot as possible although I think that only affects HCs. No air filter would help if your air filter is dirty. What does the slip the emissions place gave you say about what to look at for CO failures?

GeneralDisorder
Set your timing back to 0, or even negative a couple degrees. You might have to get out and push to get going at a light, but your emmissions will dissapear. If that doesn't work, then disconnect the vac advance completely. Also make sure your AIS is in working order. GD
SuperRallyRoo
Well... I can't really set the timing. I have an ea82 flywheel and didn't bother transfering timing marks cause it was a rush rush type of thing. I'll try the moving back a few little bit though and even the disty advance thing. Or I will suggest it to the emissions dude tomorrow see what he thinks if we can't get it to pass.
edrach
Matt, I have two flywheels in the garage currently--an EA81 and an EA82. The timing marks are only 4 degrees different between the two. If you insist, I can look at them and see whether that's advanced or retarded. That should get your timing close enough to run and then you can adjust it "by ear" to eliminate pinging.
