2017 Outback Touring - Cargo Basket - Sensor Interference?

2017 Outback Touring (which we love BTW) that's equipped with the rear back up and side collision sensors. This includes the blind spot detection lane change assist, rear cross traffic alert and reverse automatic braking.

 

 

I have an installed trailer hitch on it and thinking about buying a cargo basket to haul extra travel trip items, the lawn mower and other dirty power equipment when needed. I also have a 4x8 utility trailer I occasionally use as well, maybe once a year but have yet to use it with this Subie. A carrier would be much easier to use for smaller items.

 

Does anyone have first hand experience on what this does to the sensors?

 

I'm assuming I need to shut them off the temporarily while using the carrier?

 

I'm OK with shutting them down, but I'm hoping the blind spot sensors will still work because I'd really miss them.

If towing anything or carrying on a hitch platform, I'd rely on my eyes (mirrors, windows) and ears for issues along with frequent stops say 15 min (make sure everything is secured), again in 30 min, then hourly. Not a fan of relying on sensors as there is an inherent risk involved, especially if they obstructed.

Reverse braking/ backup warning will definitely not work as the sensors will be blocked by the basket or trailer.  RCTA/BSD ***may*** still work ok depending on how wide the basket is, as the sensors are in the corners of the bumper and aimed outward at an angle.  You would just have to try it and see.

You can go to "mysubaru.com" and ask one of the Subaru's CSRs for an answer.  They can go to their engineering department for an answer.  You also might check your owners manual to see if it is covered in there.  BTW, you will need your VIN to set up your account at mysubaru.com.  It is for owners only.
