OLS
This Is My 2nd Subaru. The 1st One Actually Is For My Wife,2001 Legacy Wagon. I Just Purchased The Xt 5spd,for $400 With 140k On It. The Only Problem I Could See, Apart From Some Paint Problems, Was A Echaust Leaking Noice Near The Engine, But Didn't Pay Too Much Problem Thinking That's A Simple Exhaust Thing And You Can Fix It Cheap In Queens, Ny. Apparently It's Not That Easy. A Mechanic Said That It's A Cross-over Exhoust Pipe And You Need To Lift The Engine To Access It. Is This True? Is There Any Easier (cheeper ) Way To Fix It? This Is My Forst Post. Wish Me Luck With The Sub

Your exhaust system is complex, consisting of turbo piping, but it can all be accessed from underbody. Go find a (honest) Subaru mechanic.
calebz
No BS.. its true.. Motor needs to be lifted to remove the crosover pipe on a turbo. Its not that big of a deal to lift the motor a little.. 2 14mm nuts(not 10mm as stated in other post) EDIT.. just noticed the other threads.. your answers are there. gravelRX
I just removed my crossover pipe on the RX without undoing anything. I ran the car up onto ramps and it gave me the ground clearance to get it out. Lots of spatial relations and patience though. Oh, I see it's an XT, are they that different? I say get it onto some jack stands and go at it. If you get it off take it to a muffler shop and have it repaired. Just so the shop doesn't have to move the mounting points you will be OK for the reinstall. I'm currently building a jig that will hold all of the mount points solid and in position to fabricate a bigger diameter(less restrictive) crossover/uppipe for my turbo car. Good Luck with yours. .02 Regards, Jay
RedLance
Well, since I own an 85, and 86, and an 87.5, all XT Turbos, I feel quilified to answer this. It depends on where the leak is. If it's just a gasket, then NO, you DO NOT have to lift the engine. If the cross over pipe actually has a hole in it, then you might have to. Depending on how talented you are, you might be able to wrestle the pipe out with out lifting the engine. I know it would a whole lot easier to do if you removed the 2 nuts mentioned above, and jacked the engine up a few inches. The problem comes when you try to get the turbo end of the pipe, down between the engine and the front cross memeber...it gets to be a tight squeeze in there, with the big turbo flange on the end of the pipe. Hope that helps. RedLance
