OLS Posted June 17, 2004 Share Posted June 17, 2004 This Is My 2nd Subaru. The 1st One Actually Is For My Wife,2001 Legacy Wagon. I Just Purchased The Xt 5spd,for With 140k Miles On It. The Only Problem I Could See, Apart From Some Paint Problems, Was A Echaust Leaking Noice Near The Engine, But Didn't Pay Too Much Problem Thinking That's A Simple Exhaust Thing And You Can Fix It Cheap In Queens, Ny. Apparently It's Not That Easy. A Mechanic Said That It's A Cross-over Exhaust Pipe And You Need To Lift The Engine To Access It. Is This True? Is There Any Easier (cheeper ) Way To Fix It? Turbone Posted June 17, 2004 Share Posted June 17, 2004 This is something that cant be worked on while still on the car. The cross over pipe has a shield on it and most times isnt removed. At least I never have. If possible find a replacement. If you cant find a replacement, have the flanges cut off the pipe, then have them welded to a new pipe. rallyruss Posted June 17, 2004 Share Posted June 17, 2004 yes you do need to lift the motor to change the gaskets. but its not that hard only two 10 mm nutz and jack it up a bit. Turbone Posted June 17, 2004 Share Posted June 17, 2004 Sorry, I should have mentioned this in my first post. I just had to replace the cross over on my 86 Turbo Wagon. I tried changing the gaskets, but the leak wasnt there. You couldnt see, feel or hear exactly where it was leaking. So I jacked the motor up, removed the pipe and replaced with a extra I had. Is There Any Easier (cheeper ) Way To Fix It? hi had this problem on my 86 xt and on a 1989 wagon both times the pipe had cracked on the flange the turbo bolts to. The first time i removed the pipe and replaced for a new one this cost big bucks + lots of time had to change 4 studs in the engine new gaskets and pipe the second time I removed the turbo and welded the crack from the inside of the pipe it was like that till i sold the car I put 40.000 miles on it however that was on a uk spec car so maybe differences in the pipe/turbo layout regards fanum Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Wish Me Luck With The Sub take off the skid plate. if the pipe has to come off and out of the car, unbolt the turbo from the cross pipe, let the turbo sit where it is. if anything take the nuts off the motor mounts and the motor up a few inches. we fixed a exhaust gasket and replaced 2 studs, which had to be tapped out to the next size, all with the motor in the car and the pipe on the motor. take a stus out, remove old gasket, slip in new gasket, install new stud. it was more difficult trying to get a box-end wrench on the nut than anything. tokk within an hour to do both sides, one 14mm wrench and one 14mm socket if the studs are good (they stayed in the motor when the nuts come off) then i recommend the first procedure.
