Lifter tick or something else?

I have just replaced the headgaskets clean all the lifters ( one had thick tar looking thing in it), reseal oilpump two years ago and resealed the engine.

This is the second time i replace headgaskets because of cheap hg last time.

 

This sound could not be heard before hg job. I think.

Only a very hard lifter tick.

 

Running 10w30 oil.

Sure it isn't an exhaust leak?

Get a piece of heater hose or garden hose & use it as a stethoscope to listen with.

If internal, a long large screwdriver with the handle pressed to your ear helps. Touch the blade to cylinder head, exhaust flange, etc to pinpoint the noise.

How many miles have you driven since HG replacement?

 

The HLAs are frequently loud after the engine has been apart.

 

There's a place that sells rebuilt HLAs for cheap - like $5 or something, hardly worth guessing with any really nasty or questionable ones.

Sounds like a mine which I am diagnosing as a lifter tick. 

 

 

Mine was much worse and I did the following which helped reduce the noise significantly.

 

With the dirty oil still in the engine (less 1 qt.), do an engine oil flush.  Then change the oil and replace filter.  Add new oil with auto, trans. fluid at oil/ATF ratio of 3:1

 

Run that for about 100 miles and see if the lifter frees up.  If there is a significant reduction in noise, you can try a second oil flush at the 100 mile mark when you do the change again.

 

If you don't have any success then you are looking at finding the side with bad lifter noise and replacing the lifters.  I found some at RockAuto for $10 ea.  I haven't done the replacement yet.

You have a lifter tick that is most likely caused when the two oil transfer sealing faces at the interior of the camtower, were not sealed with a little gasket maker, before assembly of the camtower.  The gasket maker is very lightly dabbed on around the oil the oil transfer holes, or around the rim of the oil transfer surfaces.    There is a secondary whine that sounds like the timing belts are shifted too far backward and rubbing against the plastic back panels.
