I  recently paid 300 for a 97 legacy L, 2.2, auto. Runs good but trans has torque bind. trans light flashes 24 - duty  C selinoid.  With 270 k miles not sure if its worth fixing.  Found a 96 outback with no motor but supposedly good trans. Trans numbers are different.  97 = tz102zacaa   96 = tz102z2aba. any chance of  swapping or should I fix the 97?

just read sir loin's post of june 3rd. I think that answers my question. Now, how about a link to a tranny swap how-to post?
