Urabus25
Hey everyone, I'm in the process of fixing the shifter slop in my 87 ea81 gl hatchback 4 speed, 4wd. I got down to the actual shaft coming out of the transmission the shifter attaches to to drill and tap the hole to get rid of the slop. Well when I got down there, it seems that someone before me already drilled and tapped it to thread a bolt through it, and it still has a tremendous amount of slop. How do I go about fixing this now? Do I try and locate a new shaft and sleeve? Or just drill it again? Is there something else I can do on top of the bolt through the shaft? I found on rock auto a part they call a "shift shaft repair sleeve" that came up under the transmission for this car to, but it doesn't have a picture to show what the part actually is. Has anyone used one of those? It's $22 so I thought I may order it and see what it is. The picture is where I'm at now. The shaft I'm trying to repair is the one coming out of the transmission on the side.
bratman2
What I did with mine many years ago and to the best of my memory with out climbing under my Brat. I drilled completely through and used a bolt, nut and washers. I split the collar so when I tightened it down it would clamp it tight.
el_freddo
Yep, you've got to cut a slot into the tube that goes over the selector shaft from the gearbox. This allows the nut and bolt combo to clamp onto the shaft, further reducing any slop. Also best to replace the bush at the base of the gear lever as I believe this is the initial cause of the wear in that collar and pin setup. Has worked a treat for me on two brumbys so far CheersBennie

Any idea what that piece is called? Or is it just a shift linkage piece? I already have bushings for everything else as well
