jono
Watch this thread. Got the 89 Brumby, twin port ea82 " the mongrel" , snorting propane care of Impco. Managed to fit up the custom exhaust from my 85 GLTA while I had my ea82t in for a fitting. Now the mongrel has a 41 mm turbo base plate exhaust cross over up pipe. Next trick was to gut an unknown turbo for its housing and a die grind session interrupted by hacksaw and drill press sessions. Added a hand rail end plate 115 mm to cover where the input side should normally be all ready to bolt up the factor y cat and custom 2.5" custom system. See if I can get a wrx or ej or even a turbo sound out of the even more of a mongrel
ferp420
So are you saying you have a high compresion ea82 with a turbo and running on propain iteresting more info please
jono
No. This baby is a carb block sporting turbo heads( they were sitting around at the time ten years ago) an efi yep turbo intake manifold sniffing propane , no turbo. But then carried out an idea I had years ago , fitted turbo exhaust manifold and a gutted exhaust half of a turbo. Plated up the cast housing where core came out. Bolt up my turbo exhaust from GLTA turbo back to tail pipe. It is non turbo. Curious to hear what sound I get when I start it up and get to drive it. charles_thomas
Post a sound clip when you get it done, that ought to be...interesting
ferp420
Oh. That sounds like a great combo for a turbo
TheGageinator
Sounds a little restrictive But very cool!
jono
Restrictive I also thought so that is where the die grinder, hacksaw and drill press came in ...cut out the interference☺
jono
Another idea banging around in my head is can get some low use ea81 cheap. Got an spfi intake, another spare turbo and pipe, an mad boost retard control for any old coil some left over bit s so thinking turbo LPG ea81 not so hard to do
jono
TheGageinator, was there more thought behind your suggestion it sounded a little restrictive? I found I needed to remove the baffling heatshield and fiberglass stuffing after the rhs pick up and found to my complete surprise that the exhaust tube diameter OD looked very restrictive as in a lot smaller than between the two heads! Not sure if it is my fueling choice combo or this skinny pipe and opened up exhaust side of a turbo housing but I have very little go! But does it sound a gutteral idle note I did a record of it, saved it but no idea where it went in my 7" x 4" device
ferp420
I say put the turdbo back on it and a big turdbo at that the turdbo manifold isent designed for low end torque and the low compresion carb block is weak on power to start with and propain has alot fewer BTUs than gas so ya its gona be a turd with out a turbo but the compresion bump of the carb block over the turbo block and a turbo should be about right on for propain the mongral as i have always understood was a high comprestion motor or high powered ea82 non turbo you have a castrated ea82t or the ea82c not a very well thought out plan unless your building it as a go cart motor or something i bet it would run for ever as a industrial motor like for a generator or water pump built like that
jono
I may have confused some contributors who have kept up with my movements. This is carb block sporting twin port efi heads off a turbo engine. It has never had a turbo on it and is higher comp whatever 87 carb engines had. With normal exhaust as in EA82 y pipe and ea81 from there to tailpipe. Went bloody well on propane @ 22 dbtdc timing @800 rpm idle Then I spoilt it with some idle time and an idea along the UEL header idea that has been ignoring away in head for years. Now I know what a naked EA82T exhaust looks like, scewed a good turbo too but know what it looks like inside and how hard it is to get apart I am yet to try an EA82T without its turbo If the strangled up pipe from rhs head is the cause of my low power an unable to load it up can't recommend it other than poos and giggles Can hardly drive it up an incline at all but runs OK downhill. Can also rev it on the spot no load. Sounds like an early wrx or sick rotary. Gonna call in a a rootary and sube rally workshop for mystery sound quiz see if they reckon I have a Wankel under the bonnet
jono
Ferp old school theory was a gallon of propane only had 80% the energy of gallon of gasoline so you just use more propane to keep up with gasoline. I like Propane's alleged 109 Ron octane. Ran 12 or 13 pounds boost and it rarely excited the knock sensor. Even ran for months with knock box mistakenly disconnected! Do that on a gasoline EA82T and you will have a grenade. Low comp 7.7:1 EA82T about to go back in once awd box shift attitude been sorted and I have my custom sway bar to suit
jono
Hmmm....standard ea82 exhaust in now from head to tail. Sounds bit quieter, lost the ej turbo sound but still got poor driveability issues. I reminded self the last time this ute on the road it suffered something very sudden on an intersection take off, crippling it to extent of limp home rather embarrassed blowing a sordid concoction of coolant, oil and steam. It was an engine sat for a decade rotting internally before I did heads and gaskets. I figured the home finish of the heads failed me. Engine did not even get a post mortem. I now wonder if current engine is crippled by a problem in my vapour fuel system, and nothing wrong with old donk? Before old donk was pulled I tried a sealwel and all ran well enough in the yard no load after. The two 82s I have run tested in ute have only been no load tested since until these recent days. Off to swap converters and inspect current one
jono
Changing the size if my propane carb fixed my drivability problems. The turbine housing and turbo exhaust in the na was not the cause of bad running
