2002 legacy wagon bad 5 sp trans

Recommended Posts

I was looking at car-part to see which manual trans will fit in my legacy wagon and it shows that a many legacy trans will work from 2001-2003.  But it does not list outback or legacy GT models.  Is there really a difference?

Main issue is final drive ratio.  Outbacks have a different final drive ratio.  Car-part.com is a reliable source of what fits and what doesn't.

As opposed to some random guy on the internet (with some senior member exceptions)

If the final drive ratio matches the OB and GT will work Most EJ25s MTs are 4.11 but I recall some 00-04 oddities like a 3.9....maybe, it's been awhile

Look up gear ratio charts or search subaru online for ring and pinions or rear diffs to get ratios and compare.

Sometimes searching car-part.com for rear diffs will reveal the final drive in some individual listings.

Search an OB and regular legacy and compare.

L wagon had 3.90 FDR.

Outback and GT models had 4.10 FDR.

That's really the only difference. You can use either trans as long as you use the matching ratio rear diff as well.

this is incorrect.

OB and GT manual trans use 4.11, not 4.10
