DaveT
It's in the casting of the head also. Oddly, not in the intake passage.

ferp420
Use the mlc gaskets or multi layered copper gaskets they dont have that tab they never leak and are reusable there extremely hard to come by but are worth the effort
montermahan
thank's ferp420. I have had 2 different intake gaskets blow on me, I guess the last one was my fault, I used a light coat of super grey silicone on them and i guess it worked like a lubricant and one of the fel-pro gaskets broke in several pieces. I now put in a set that looked like graphite, but there was a metal core, and I used a light coat of copper coat on them. maybee I shouldn't use any sealant at all. DaveT
I found the Fel Pro ones to fail also. I got oem ones, they are hard and a little slippery. I think with metal inside. No problems so far.
wagons
I would by a direct Subaru intake manifold gasket. Before I bought this car off my friend he went through 3 sets. I bought some from my subaru dealer for him and they worked without a flaw. If the surface is flat on a machined part to a machined part then sealant should not be needed
