washwagon
I've been reading a ton about the lifters, piston slap, tension pulley, and rod knocks. Now I want to run my sounds by you all to try to narrow it down. It's like a loud tick or clacking. It seems to be either driver side or middle of the engine. Definitely does up and down with RPM. It clicks at idle as well. Hot or cold, its there. Its on a 96 outback 2.2. 212xxx miles. Just changed the oil to Castrol 5w 30. I have not yet tried the MMO approach yet, I just got the car. What does it sound like to you all? What would be the most direct way to determine and fix it? thanks!
washwagon
Does not appear to have any power loss or weird chugging or running rough. It runs great!

Fairtax4me
Majority of the time on the 2.2 that's a stuck or collapsed HLA. Remove the valve cover and unbolt the rocker shaft assembly from the head. The one that's stuck will be pretty obvious. Disassemble the shaft and lay out the parts in order. Clean it thoroughly and make sure the oil supply holes aren't clogged. Bleed the HLAs and reinstall. Edited October 29, 2017 by Fairtax4me
