Kmenex Posted November 11, 2017 Share Posted November 11, 2017 (edited) Greeting!So if anyone remembers i replace the HG on my legacy and the timing pulleys and belts and all that jazzz... All those repairs went well. I knew the tranny would be going soon but did not replace it yet... However now I am encountering the problems.I have come to the forums to help narrow down the potential problem before decided to swap a new tranny.NOTE THIS IS A MANUAL 5 SPEED TRANSMISSIONDetail of the problems:First gear works fine...in second gear onwards if there is any type of extra load on the car (going up hill) or if you put too much gas then the RPM shoot up but the car does not accelerate. It feels like the power of the engine is just not transferring to the drive assembly.So the RPM go up and if you let off the gas they will drop down very quickly to "where they should be" relative to the speed and current gear the car is in. If you try to add more gas often the RPM will just increase without actually accelerating the car.... So In essence I have to go up every hill in first or second gear...To me this reminds me of when my "Tranny went out" (whatever that means) on my first car, a Toyota truck. Feels similar.However I am wondering if it might be the clutch instead? or maybe something related to the transmission that does not warrant a swap?Additional details: there is no grinding or whirling noises or anything like that... and no burning smell...180k milesAnyone want to help me get to the source of the problem?Thanks!-k Edited November 11, 2017 by Kmenex Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

moosens Posted November 11, 2017 Share Posted November 11, 2017 Sorry , but with that mileage and you having had the engine out - you should have done the clutch. So this time , if you are doing the work , you’ll get the clutch kit - a good one not the cheapest - and also do the rear main seal if you didn’t the first time. There is that “oil separator” plate you can also change out if it’s the original plastic one and if you didn’t the first time. Be sure you get a new clutch release (throw out) bearing and fresh wire clips to hold it in place. Enjoy Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

edcooley Posted December 12, 2017 Share Posted December 12, 2017 (edited) My Legacy does the same thing sometimes. I had a shop put in a used transmission and new clutch about a year ago. The clutch started slipping so I took it back, but the clutch stopped slipping before I got there. The mechanic guessed there may have been a rock or something in there keeping the clutch from making full contact--we live on a gravel road. It has happened twice more--the clutch slips for a couple days and then heals up. My driveway is up a steep hill so I can tell when it's working and not working. Actually putting it in 2nd gear going up the hill makes better progress than 1st gear, but with a growly noise. Normally trying to go up my driveway in 2nd gear would lug it.
