Jakethewhite
I changed the fuel pump and I know that it works because when I disconnect the line and bypass the fuel relay it pumps fuel. So I changed the fuel relay because I wasn't getting fuel while the key was turn or cranked or anything. So I replaced it and still nothing changed. No fuel will pump without bypassing. naru
Probably an ignition fault. Got spark?
Jakethewhite
87 suburbs gl wagon 4x4 and yes there's spark
DaveT
I think, but am not sure, that 87 and newer are SPFI vs carburetor. It makes a big difference in what the relay is controlled by.
wagons
Hey DaveT, mine is an 1987 1.8 sohc vin 5. This means 4% of all built are the sohc with the carb I guess I stuk out on simplicity lol. So to the OP, is it fuel injected or carb? That will make diagnostics easier if we all know
Jakethewhite
Definately carb on my model
Jakethewhite
Engine is a 1.8 EA82
DaveT
Yes, they are all EA82. Carb, SPFI, MPFI, or Turbo - all different fuel systems and controls.
Jakethewhite
So what else did you need to know
DaveT
If it's a carburetor, it will have an odd shaped metal air cleaner case on top of the carb.. If it's SPFI, the rubber boot on top of the throttle body should have SPFI embossed in the rubber, and the air cleaner is a box on the fender, side opposite the battery. MPFI I haven't seen, they were not common. Turbo, well, there is a turbo somewhere near the engine. Alternate - take a picture of what's under the hood, and post it. naru
Check fuse #11. If OK verify ignition relay operation. Check fuses 5 and 12 too.
wagons
Ok you have have a spfi. It's a fuel injected engine
DaveT
The relay should be energised by a wire from the ECU. Connect a voltmeter or small test light to the coil of the relay, and sre if it gets power while cranking. Next step, move to the pin on the ECU. Jakethewhite
It was one of the fuses. Number 12 wasn't connected at all. Plugged this in and suddenly everything started turning on. But now another prob exists. It will start and then die immediately and dies quicker if I try to press the gas. Any ideas. Thanks
naru
Low fuel pressure.
silverhelme
Not to be picky but when you replaced the fuel pump, was it a carb or spfi pump? Carb pump doesn't have enough pressure for the spfi system.
Jakethewhite
I'm not sure. I replaced it with one of the ones that said it would it. It is a spectra premium and now that I read the fine print yes it says carb model but on the website it says fits my vehicle. Didn't see that carb identification tho. There's other I can buy for fuel injection. So that would be the problem then? Hopefully

DaveT
A carb fuel pump won't make enough pressure to tun a SPFI. Carbs take 5 to 10psi roughly. SPFI requires over 20psi.
