Knucklehead Saloon
G'day Gang. Is anyone running window winders made from metal ? What make/model fits the subaru spline ? Thanks in advance.
987687
I had a metal window crank in my brighton, here's how I did it. Went to harbor freight and bought the cheapest vise grips they had Was such a piece of spoob I left em there when I totaled the car.
dfoyl
Early MY's had a metal with plastic insert winder (at least on the GL's). Maybe first gen is the same ?
moosens
What color do you need ? There are no metal versions. Just get another one.
Subasaurus
EA71 are made of metal BUT suprisingly, half of the cranks are broken on my EA71 vehicles, i guess a bad mixture of metals? EA81 is plastic outside but not sure if theres metal inside of it as i've never had one break on me before or seen one broken, same goes for the EA82. i could check for you this afternoon if all the window cranks splines from all 3 generations are the same if you need that information? but in my own opinion, metal cranks are cool but seem to be weaker than the plastic ones for whatever reason... just in my experience. iceageg
You might be able to use a rear break pedal or gear change lever from a motorcycle. I have seen them with splined holes and an allen head bolt to clamp them down on the input shafts. Might have to do some searching to find one that was the right diameter but it would definitely be metal if you found one. It's a long shot and certainly wouldn't look original, but it may be a functional alternative.

Leeroy
There are HELP branded window winder handles on eBay US all the time. These are the diecast/plastic insert versions (up to the early EA81 1980s Subarus) and they will fit the Brumby/Brat (as noted by dfoyl above). While they do break, as they are cast metal, it will take a long time for that to happen!
