How do you tap holes that are deeper than the length of the tap?

Google was flooded with machinists work, etc.

When tapping a hole that's deeper than the length of a tap - you need whatever is holding the tap to be smaller than the diameter of the hole you're tapping so it can go down into the hole and reach the threads.

Some tap sockets do not appear to be small enough to do that....

Hmmm. Have you ever used adapters?

An adapter would allow length variations for cramped quarters. Kind of like sockets - having one or two socket lengths would be limiting.

I’m usually only chasing threads not making new ones, maybe the answer is more along the lines of making a bolt into a chaser so I’m not limited to taps?

weld the tap onto the end of a bolt.

what the crack - i would have guessed you can't weld that but for no good reason, i've never considered what they're made of. that is the elegant solution I was hoping for if you're not pulling my leg!

cool the tap cutters with a cold wet rag though. If you get it too hot the metallurgy will change and then the tap will actually twist. If it's a cheap tap it might do that anyway... You should be able to mig it solid enough without getting it too hot

A pulley tap has a reduced shank just for that purpose.

got it.  good to know if it's one i think i'll use again. in general i'll need this to chase threads, nothing crazy.  i'm in a rural area/state and often can't get stuff like this easily.  and something like this is likely to be a one-off tool, so i'd rather use the taps i have.
