SubeeTed
Hi ALL! Well, I have seen a 1997 Legacy 5 Spd GT in my local paper? It has 123K miles on it, dealer maintaned. It has a NEW motor as of 38K miles ago??? So my questions in general are: just what problems does this year GT Wgn have? What about this replacement motor at 38K ago. I haven't called yet. I'de like to have my questions ready for the person. I'm going to ASSume that this replacement IS from the dealer. He does mention that it was maintained by the dealer! Let's say it was replaced 2 years ago, 2002. Would this 2002 2.5 have ALL the problems fixed that I'm hearing these 1997 2.5 motors have? Would it come with factory, transferable warrantee?? HELP??? Many thanks, SubeeTed
charlierh2
im assuming that the new engine is because of head gasket failliar, it could possiblely be running without oil of a snapped t-belt but less likely. so all you need to know is if the new engine is a phase I or II. id say go for it if its a phase II but if its phase I then be careful and make sure you get a little better price:) good luck nice car
Commuter
I made a quick list of the "things to look for" in this thread. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=16588&highlight=Outback The Outback and the GT wagon have similar mechanical 'bits', so it should provide a good reference. Many thanks, SubeeTed I have spoken with the owner. I found out that the engine wasn't replaced, not the whole thing.....just the short block! It was done back in Sept. of 2002. So...does this mean it's just wanting to burn up the head gaskets again? He said the the 4th cylinder cracked. It had 80K something miles on it. The mechanic at the dealership was able to convince Subaru to take of part of the problem...I.E.. They onlt supplied parts, they paid for labor! So, what does this tell me? Commuter
So, what does this tell me? Hard to say. You should have the most up to date gasket. Warranty would typically be 12 months and 12,000 miles, so nothing left there. Some have had multiple failures of head gaskets. For what it's worth, my headgaskets went in 2002. Then the bottom end failed. A new (but Phase I) shortblock was put in. It's been just over 2 years and about 85k miles since. Knock wood, everything is holding together.
