aftermarket fuel pump problems...

Recommended Posts

anybody ever use a Purolator 12S fuel pump. it's 5-7 psi I think. I'm running one of those with a pressure regulator and a weber 32/36.

recently I've had the pump (stock location) quit on me 3 times. Each time, it would start back up almost immediately (last night it took a lot longer)

I thought maybe ignition module, but the pump actually just quits. can't hear it pumping at all....

any thoughts?

I had an intermittent short on my pump years ago. Dealer attached a light to it to see if it was getting power and then let it run till it quit.

I recently replaced my fuel pump again--not knowing it was my Fuel Pump Control Unit acting up. The new pump may be a Purolator, I'd have to check.

Is your FPCU behaving as it should? Are you getting power?

Good luck,

my fuel pump is inside my cab. along with the electrical. the fuel filter is outside the car. after hearing about vickaroos fuel pump gettin disabled temporarily by mud i decided to leave it in the cab, even though everybody says its dangerous. but you got a brat! put it in the bed, and wire it direcley, then you wont have to count on the 20 year old wiring, on something so important. hasnt there been alot of peepl that have wired directly, because of the same types of problems? put it on a switch, and its theft proof.

I'm not using the FPCU. just wired straight from a IGN switched power source, and have a safety shutoff run off a oil pressure switch.

I bypassed the safety switch, and same thing happened.

on my turbo wagon when i had the arb motor, i used a toggle switch for the carb's pump. then i put in the turbo motor, and ran the turbo pump to the stock wiring. it worked enough to get the car running, but by the time it was ready to drive, it quit working, so i just wired it to my existing toggle.

on the rx, with trashwagon's carb, i just run it off the + coil terminal. i dont have a relay, but the + coil or anythig that comes on with the key on the fuse box would be ideal(my coil connection used an alligator lip, so if i have problems i can o the battery if i chose)

well, I replaced the pump. after doing some research, the problems/symptoms I was experiencing were common fuel pump failures, so I replaced the pump, with one better suited to the weber, and no regulator.

I put a "backup" wire in place with the same pump connector, and ran the wire through my slider and had it hooked to a aux power socket end, just in case. I had the Brat in a 4th of July parade, and wanted to be ready just in case it was the wiring...

parade was awesome, even in the rain, and no problems...

the yesterday, went to drive it, and it died on me again. I hooked the pump power up to IGN power, and turned the key to RUN. no pump. go underneath, and when I moved the harness it started up... aha! bad wiring!

so I've been using my backup now, until I can fix the wiring... :)
