Installing EJ alternator into EA/ER vehicle

Recommended Posts

I am electrically average and unsure, so if anyone could hold my hand for a minute:

White wire = tied to the main charge wire (good idea to make new charge wire back to battery through fusible link)

Black/white= "charge" Lamp (L) goes to EA white/red wire....looks like you;ve got that right

Yellow= Switched power.....and this will be were the regulator sees reference voltage......Can go to EA Black/white (Ig. +) or to the Yellow wire of EJ harness like it was in the Legacy........It just needs switched power.

1. the yellow wire is the "added", additional 3rd wire that the EJ has that the EA does not, right?

2. the yellow wire needs to be 12 volts any time the car is "on", does not matter where it comes from as long as it's always 12 volts when the car is on and off when the car is off - is that right?

3. can this be done with any EJ alternators or just 90-99's? what about later 2000+ stuff or the H6 alternators that may interact with the ECU differently?

4. What does he mean by "EA Black/white (Ig. +).....where is that wire?

That exact list will probably only work on the early stuff, '90s, maybe a bit into the '00s.

That said, it's almost certainly possible that an alternator could be made work (electrically) that's much newer. But the exact wire count, colors, and function may change a bit.

Also you can buy the plugs for the 95 to 99 - it's the same plug thats used on the 86 to 94 Nissan Maxima alt. And the swap is simple - big wire to big wire, little wire to little wire. The older EJ alt with the +12v lead only uses this for the internal VR.... I ALWAYS swap those alts out on the first gen legacy for the 95 to 99 unit and cut that silly yellow lead. They have more amps and they are crazy cheap from the dealer for high quality.
