The damn timing belt must have broke.... I had spark a couple days ago so it must have happened since then. Guess its time to get dirty, any advice? Rotor not turning? 84s do not have a timing belt Sure it is 84? I`ve seen the drive gear on the crankshaft strip, Edited March 7, 2018 by naru
84GLturbo
It's an 84... Going to pull the dist and see what I can see.... Just saw that it had gears but read they were pretty bulletproof.
84GLturbo
The dist is jammed in there. I tried to lift it out and can turn it a couple degrees but it is jammed solid. Any ideas on getting it out without causing more damage?
naru
Not really. Not unless you have a slide hammer handy. Penetrating oil and use the movement you do have to loosen it furthur. Edited March 7, 2018 by naru
84GLturbo
It is wedged.. Now I cant even turn it. What am I going to damage if I pop the reluctor of the shaft and try moving it with vise grips? I can't find an exploded view of where the shaft lines up with the cam gear. naru
The drive gear is on the crankshaft, not the cam. At this point,I would remove the crank seal to look at the drive gear and disty gear. Sounds like you will need to do that anyway. Be gentle on the crank gear. They are NLA new.
84GLturbo
Thanks, I am going to try the slide hammer trick real gently. I wasn't looking forward to dismantling every thing to get to the crank seal. This was just going to be a project and now it sounds like work... carfreak85
Don't go by the production date on the chassis. Where is the distributor located on the engine, front or rear, left or right?
84GLturbo
Front passenger side. I checked the vin on a link somebody posted here. It was produced 10/83
84GLturbo
If I remove the plug in the pic can I get access to the gear at the bottom of the shaft?
84GLturbo
We finally got it out... The dist froze and shredded the gear on the crank... Do I have to pull the motor and split the case to get to it?
carfreak85
Don't turn that engine over anymore... Needs to be disassembled and cleaned with all those shavings in there. I do have a few spare EA81T engines, if you're looking to replace this one.

Do I have to pull the motor and split the case to get to it? Been there done that. No,the gear comes out right after the seal. Fairly easy. 84GLturbo
Do you know if the bolt holding the crank pulley is right or left thread? It is tighter than hell and I'm trying not to turn the crank with it...

84GLturbo
After several hours online and calling parts houses I am coming up empty. Does anybody know of a parts supply that might carry this part?
naru
You might have to go used. Every subaru engine since 1975 used the same part. Try the classifieds.Someone will have one.
84GLturbo
It doesn't have to be the EA81 motor?
naru
Nope, any OHV engine 1975(maybe earlier) and up. Your looking for Subaru 82550 4100 in case that helps.
