1986 wagon gl 4wd rear coil springs

numbchux has recommended an aftermarket spring supplier that sells whatever height, spring rate you want. find that thread and follow it. i did and got rear XT6 springs last year. if i had it to do again i'd get 12", i think i bought 10" and i'd rather it sit higher and may swap them out for a larger set.

 

i think 180 pound spring rate is roughly high end of stock and you can bump to 225 - 250 for more lift/higher spring rate.

Rates: if you get an FSM it may list the spring rate of your rear struts for your exact model. Then you’ll have a good starting point for what spring rate to get. FSMs are often available online for free but chux says highest EA82 is 190.

 

For eibach Springs There’s a great detailed chart you can find it online and you just look up the list of 2.5” coil springs and get the part nnumber you want for the length and spring rate you want.

 

Eibach Springs - numbchux used 2.5”, 250 pound spring rate springs in the rear and retained nearly stock rear height, maybe a little taller on a 4WD XT6, which is a fairly tall vehicle in stock form - almost 9” of ground clearance I think.

 

You can the search using some terms there that numbchux uses to find his other comments in the topic. I think he mentions the 250 pounds is fairly stiff so I went a little lower, maybe 200 pounds but wish I would have gotten 225 or 250 as I didn’t get enough ground clearance. Mine seems to sit an inch or lower than stock but I could be wrong as I typically lift mine.

 

They perform fine as far as I can tell, I’m not a performance junkie but it’s rides fine with new springs and new struts. so if you want lower the 200 pound spring rate should work. If you want stock or a tiny more the 250 works.

 

This is all for the xt6 though so your vehicle may differ.

The honda front springs work well in the rear of the L series - especially if you're lifted and carrying some gear/have a rear bar with spare wheel arm.

Thanks Bennie. That looks higher than stock - is that just Honda springs on EA82 4WD struts and that’s it?

 

How much do those springs “lift” if over stock?

 

Do you recall year/model? Funny that such a low old school Honda has long springs suitable for this. Haha

I guess my post was confusing....i need springs for the front. I will be carrying some weight n the back so im gonna try the honda springs for the rear.....but what about the front springs

Oh yeah the title says rear springs so that’s the first thing that comes to my mind.

 

I guess you’ve seen Jesek’s post about front springs?

I got all my info from here. Thanks to Jeszek!

 

The civic springs I used raised the rear by about 1.5 inches - which the weight of the rear bar, spare wheel and jerry can (both on rear bar) settled it back down to a bit higher than with the old springs. These springs gave me better load carrying capacity over the stock units by a long shot.

When the original oil filled KYBs died I replaced them with aftermarket KYBs - simply for cost reasons. These units are gas filled and initially raised the rear end about an inch again. They've since settled.

 

I'm now looking into the toyota IFS front strut assembly swap to see if this helps with extra height when loaded, even if I need to swap them on when headed out bush loaded for an offroad touring trip.

 

My L runs a 3 inch lift except under the gearbox xmem where it's 2 inch ;)

 

Nicky, for the front springs you could possibly run a set of EJ front springs as these will be sprung heavier for the extra weight of the EJ vehicles. Outer coil diametre and overall height is what you'll need to investigate. I'm running some sort of L series aftermarket King Spring that I got second hand - I can't recall if they're raised or not.

Ford tempo springs read jeseks post for specs i can add 90+ nissan 300zx front struts work great on the rear of our l series wagons you just need the top hats from your old struts the shafts are alot bigger and the dampening is better and i think the traval is the same as stock making them alot stronger with out lossing traval
