Metadope Posted March 26, 2018 Share Posted March 26, 2018 Just how much trouble am I in for if I remove my mechanical/clutch fan (on my 1992 Loyale)? I've read threads here that seem to say it's ok, even desirable (from a standpoint of having more room to work). My Loyale is running now, but hasn't left the driveway yet, since I'm still working on it. I intend to re-install the electric fan, but I am currently fanless (both fans are out), and wonder if I could run a few miles (like to the auto parts store, six highway miles away) as she is, without blowing the head gasket or something worse. Isn't the fan there to cool while stationary? Does 55 mph air flow directly into my radiator keep me from needing a fan? As long as I don't get caught in summer traffic...? idosubaru Posted March 26, 2018 Share Posted March 26, 2018 (edited) depends on the condition of the radiator. Many have notable decreased cooling capacity from stock. Steep grades also generate tons of heat. But yes its “possible” for ea82s to be drivable below summer temps . Turn heater on high to unload more heat. Avoid AC and defrost as appropriate. jono Posted March 26, 2018 Share Posted March 26, 2018 I only run twin electric fans on my EA82 anmd turbo. They rarely come on unless stationary after a few minutes, or slow speeds. as you know , it takes time for your heater to work, you have that initial period of grace for starters. Hit HOT and fan full speed for interior heat for a little assistance. Or stop and let it cool down if you get caught out. I have two electric fans wired to relays, and drove the car all winter without realizing the thermo switch was bad. If you're doing "highway miles," you'll be fine to go to the store, or across country. Once you stop, it's an entirely different story. The heater does pull a surprising amount of heat off, as I used it when I got in a situation to know the fans weren't working at a stop light. Numbchux Posted March 27, 2018 Share Posted March 27, 2018 I'd do it, for sure. The EA82 engine does not have a very efficient cooling system, but as long as you keep moving, it should be fine. I drove my Loyale for probably 2 years without any fans, '92 EJ22 swap with stock-replacement all-brass EA82 radiator. 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Have to look at the 2 options mentioned above. saw that double row radiator at a junkyard about 4 years ago, didn't think much of it till i found out about 3 years ago that they are pretty rare since only turbos got them, now im kicking myself for not getting it at the moment. haven't seen another since.
