Putting engine in, EA81, many questions, oil pump gasket, sealant? More questions

Recommended Posts

I am ready to put the engine in, but first I need to install the oil pump.

"Keep Your Subaru Alive" says to not to use gasket sealant when installing the oil pump.

The surface the pump will attach to is scratched, is "no gasket sealant" still the best course of action?

Hopefully, picture below

The picture would not come up for me. I am guessing the required lack of sealant by use of the sheer paper gasket is likely because a lot of sealants squeeze into the pump and contaminate. Just a guess on my part. Good luck. If done correctly, you should obviously have no leaks but depending on just how deep those scratches are...

That paper gasket doesnt really do a lot of the sealing. most of it is done by the larger o-ring. How scratched are we talking? Like scotch brite scratches? or deep gouges?

BTW thats a beautiful looking wagon!

Sapper 157 is very right about the large O-ring's duty. Sorry, I did mine in my ea81 and wondered the same about sealing but it came out fine. Don't use shellac or the next removal will likely end up with destroying the pump housing.

I bought the rebuilt kit for the oil pump.  It has four o rings.

I was unable to remove the two phillips head screws on the pump.

Am I correct in saying I will be able to use only two of the o rings?

Also, I am guessing that the thicker small o ring goes in the hole pictured.

You need to.

It will continue to leak if you don't.

Mount it in a vice, and use an Impact driver if needed.  But you are in for disappointment if you don't reseal that section.....that's were the action happens.
