TheMeatWagon
how hard would it be to replace an automatic pushbutton 4wd tranny with any awd 4spd manual tranny? its in an 84 turbo sedan. Thanks
calebz
No such beast as an AWD 4 speed manual for a soob.. there is a 4WD D/R 4 speed though.. basically your best bet is a donor car.. and If I remember correctly, the tranny tunnel will probably need some pounding out. I have done it on an EA82 car, but not on an EA81 GD and Turbone would be the guys to give you details, but if you have all the parts, a halfway decent tool set and a little mechanical knowledge, its not that hard. s_r_g_80
Are the buttons used to select the different gears (P R N D) or just to engage 4wd?
Turbone
???Thats a confusing question...If you change the tranny to a 5spd, the indicators on the panel will mean nothing. There should be a 4wd indicator there that needs to be wired up to the tranny tho.
TheMeatWagon
Actually Turbone is who i am buying the car from . I have the tools and im sure i could find a donor car without to much work. I think the button is just to engage the awd but i am not sure as i dont own the car just yet. Thanks Cheers:drunk:
calebz
I think the button is just to engage the awd .... ITS NOT AWD!!!! (if you are using the 4speed, or any other tranny where it has to be 'engaged' by the push of a button or pull of a lever) Sorry, pet peeve:-p Rob, straighten this kid out.. TheMeatWagon
Sorry... but hey i got all my questions answered now so no more need to post thanks a ton to turbone. thanks anyways
Turbone
Ok, well. That answer helped with the last question Theres 2 buttons on the shifter. One is for taking the shifter out of park and reverse, the other is for 4wd. Like I said in my PM, the necessary parts are in the link I sent you, but I dont think theres a guide for a AT swap. But the rest you need to know is there. The 2 pieces that the tranny mount connects to are called the strut rod caps. Got to have these to mount the tranny x-member to. Theres supposed to be a small wrecking yard in Anacortes, he should have lots of donor parts. If you need the # and addy, let me know.
GeneralDisorder
...The 2 pieces that the tranny mount connects to are called the strut rod caps... Do you mean "radius rod plates"? GD
TheMeatWagon
Yeah im looking at that guide you sent me and looking at the how to keep your sooby alive book i got off ebay to orient myself. I am pondering a couple options. One is i get your car, which looks like a lot of fun, and making it a manual with the money i saved. Or my other option is try to hold out and pay a lot more for another car with a manual already in it. Thanks for everything so far. Turbone
GD, I think you corrected me on the terminology before. Qman called them strut cap rods, and ever since thats what I've called them.
GeneralDisorder
EA81 Turbo's (coupe's included) never came with a manual. Finding one with a stick already in it will be nearly impossible. I say you get that coupe from Rob, and do the conversion - or heck. Drive it down here and I'll do it for a small fee and some beer..... As for the terminology thing.... I'm not sure either of us are totally correct, but I must have heard "radiius rod plate" somewhere, and it seems to fit. I don't see how that plate has anything at all to do with the struts..... unless "strut" refers to the radius rod. hehe. I'll look it up one of these days just to kicks.... Turbone
Well, the FSM says they are leading rods. These and the sway bar bolt up to the mount, which in turn hold the tranny x-member. These mounts are different for the AT's and MT's. Its the easiest thing to over look, and the worst to leave out.
TheMeatWagon
oh i didnt know none came stock in a manual. Hmmph well maybe i will undertake this endeavor. This is my first big subaru project but i think with HTKYSA and all you guys on the forum i might just pull it off. Im doing nothing all summer so this can be my project. The only stuff i see that ill need as far as tools is a welder. Any way to do it without a welder? or should i try to find a shop or something around here that i could go do it? Hey turbone you think that car could make it alright from your house to whidbey island? thanks a ton guys Cheers:drunk:
TheMeatWagon
Oh and i did a search and BYB calls them radius rod plates but thats the only site that came up with that word for word on google. They talk about them while installing lifts on ea-81's.
Turbone
I've driven the car to Portland and up Snoqualmie Pass before, it will make it to Whidbey. As far as I know, you wont need a welder, there wont be a carrier bearing becuase of the shortness of the driveline. You may have to have the shaft lengthened tho, I think the 5spd 4wd tranny is actually shorter. As for HTKYSA, its no good for a job like this. Its just the basics on the mechanics. If you could borrow a FSM, or ask in the marketplace if someone has one for sale it would be alot more help.
TheMeatWagon
ah okay thanks. Any chance you have a picture of the car after the big storm? Thanks Cheers Oh and what exactly does FSM stand for. I hear a lot of it and i know what it is i just dont know exactly what the letters stand for Thanks. I've driven the car to Portland and up Snoqualmie Pass before, it will make it to Whidbey. TheMeatWagon
oooooooooooh man thats not nearly as bad as i thought it would be. Wow after reading about the storm you had me pretty scared. Okay well that certainly cleared up some gripes i had with the car. I have 1 or 2 more things to clear up then i will probably be ready to buy the car.
