mchunat
I have a 2011 Impreza 2.5i and I have been smelling burning oil when I am stopped for a few minutes with the engine running. I looked under the car and the oil pan is caked with oil but I have never had a single drop of oil on my driveway. I did some looking around and I can somewhat see where the leak is but my car knowledge is limited to American V8s so I am not entirely sure what I am looking at when it comes to this boxer engine. I am attaching a few photos of what I think is leaking. They are taken from the passenger side looking toward the front and the side of the motor. Im hoping one of you fine people can point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance. Edited May 9, 2018 by mchunat
montana tom
The photo's appear to show the head gasket leaking. Would be dripping on the catalytic and stinking.
mchunat
I was afraid that might be the issue. My only wonder is that I am not seeing any evidence of coolant smoke coming out of the tail pipes, no over heating and the oil looks clean (I.E. no milky appearance or coolant in the oil). Is this common with Subaru's? I am reluctant to have it fixed because the car has 120,000+ miles on it. I am assuming the fix would require having the head machined as well as pulling the entire motor.
montana tom
120,000 is just broke in on a subaru motor. I personally expect 300,000 from every subi if not more.(might be a little optimistic ) The head gaskets on that motor , do not over heat, do not mix oil into the water. They drip, oil and eventually antifreeze. Drips right on the exhaust ... stinks.. It can be lived with for years if you never let the oil or water run low. Yes to fix, the motor should come out , the heads most likely will not need a full machine just a scuff and new subaru gaskets.
GeneralDisorder
These models only leak oil externally. All other fluids and combustion are typically not a problem. Engine doesn't have to be pulled but we do for cleanliness. 120k is nothing. We consider that low mileage. GD
