Frank B
I recently purchased a 90 legacy wagon that hasn't fared too well, it has some rust issues, but that's expected to say the least! And a serious fluid leak from the tranny. It seems to be leaking from the front seal. The way it's leaking it will not build pressure to shift or drive with much power so maybe the front pump seal?? Anyway, if I can't be lucky enough to have the tranny rebuilt with success, what tranny's will fit this thing? XT6? Maybe up to a 98 legacy?? It's an AWD auto. DerFahrer
An XT6 tranny won't fit, but the good news is, any Subaru transmission that came in a Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, what have you, can be made to fit your car. Some mods might be necessary here and there, but it's pretty much a big bolt-on procedure.
NOMAD327
If all wheel drive, the front and back axle ratios must be the same when you're done.
Frank B
Thanks for the replies guys. I know I'll have to match ratio's and I haven't even looked to see what it is yet. What kind of mods am I looking at here? Linkage? Electrical? Driveshaft length? I would rather tow it to a shop because I don't have the room to tear it down at home. I just wanted to know my options. Later
jcniest5
Good luck! It's a big job for sure, even just replacing the seal. I did one on my '91 Legacy back in 8/01 and it was such a pain. I had to do it not one but two times before the seal finally seated. The first time, I was too hurry and the lip of the seal was pushed in and causing it to break after five miles of driving! Fluid was leaking like crazy fortunately I managed to get home safely on the test drive. Whewwwww!!!! I had to take down the whole tranny again and install another new seal. I almost had to install a new tranny again http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=18046 But read the conclusion...
