affordable select monitor reader (for engine diagnostics)

I just transplanted an ej22 from my 1992 legacy into a vw vanagon and would love to read engine data from its orange 9-pin select monitor port.

I see two affordable products:

* an evoscan "select monitor" - to - usb adapter (and their software)

* a cable to convert 9-pin select-montior to obd2

Do either work well?

Evoscan works ok. But the 92 computer is painfully slow at live data. Why not just wire in a 95 or 96 ECU or get an EJ20G ECU and run an Enduring Solutions daughter board.

Thanks for your note.

I'm not so interested in live analysis as diagnostics.   Will the "painfully slow" hurt all that much?

How difficult will it be wiring up a 95-96 ecu?   Are the sensors the same?    Note that I don't have a subaru body or even transmission.  Will the ecu miss much?   I selected a '92 legacy because folk who transplanted into vw t3/vanagons described the later ECUs as being fussy.also: I just wired up my ECU to the engine.  The ECU isn't turning on the fuel pump (the signal to the relay isn't being grounded).  Nonetheless the engine starts.  I'm wondering about likely wiring errors and plan to go through the voltage/resistance tables in the subaru manual.   Would being able to dump ECU data will likely help?

Note that my engine is naturally aspirated.   The VW transmission expects a low horsepower engine, and the t3/vanagon probably is unsafe beyond 65 MPH.  Beyond being unreliable, the original engine was so underpowered that it would slow down to 40 when heading uphill. 

I haven't heard of the ej20g ecu.  What makes it special?

The 95/96-ish ECU's aren't "fussy" at all. If you get into the later 90's ECU's then they want a bunch of extra fuel system sensors, etc.

The OBD-II sensors are similar. I think everything is basically the same except throttle position... different ECU connectors. 

The 20G computer (93-96 JDM WRX, etc) is pin compatible with the 92 ECU except it has reversed cam/crank signals and shares a ground on one of the sensors. Easily correctly. It allows you to use the Enduring Solutions board from the UK which allows real-time tuning.
