avoid typical parts store rebuilt alts - if yours is OEM, find a local rebuilder to go thru it - or get an OEM from a junkyard

Correct - avoid aftermarket like the plague - those are dirt cheap from Subaru anyway - buy it for $75 from the dealer.

part # 23700AA34ARA

called local dealer they quoted 185 called the dealer in across the river in oregon got it for 78. I think i am going to stop going to the local dealer...

that's an unusual price difference across dealers,. that alternator is an odd example. they're the same way online - some places have them listed much higher, but many have it around the $80 range.  it's so cheap, most subaru alternators are like $400-$500.  so even the $185 is "cheap" compared to normal alternator prices. those two dealers wont' typically have a price spread of that much, usually it's just a few percent and at most it can't be more than 20-30% even for dealers who give excellent discounts to an individual/business/etc.  so i wouldn't necessarily assume that's a normal price difference or rule out using that local dealer for parts you might need later.

headgaskets were 80, at one 50 at the other. I think it is the dealer. and they always need my vin why? they are engine parts do they really need me to get the vin to get me a part,

Sorry just frustrated thinking of all the parts i got from them and thinking that i hve been charged that much more on all of them, it adds up.

well picked it up last night,  got to get it on today and go for a drive...

So far so good I do not see any signs of head gasket issues in the 200 miles.

Do have a heater issue, lots of heat in town, goes cold on the highway. Seems odd. Any ideas? Could it just be the hoses are backwards on the block? I do have a subaru t-stat. and radiator and overflow bottle are full and working normally.

Thanks
