Mallory
Can I replace the head gaskets on my '03 Forester without pulling the engine out of the car? Is there room enough inside the inner fenders to get the heads off? It's looking like that is the source of my oil and anti-freeze leak.
idosubaru
confirm the leaks. yes it can be done but it's not ideal and need to be very careful to get a proper job that way.
3Pin
Dang, it is a bitch to leave it in. If you have to do the HG, it is so much easier to wrench on with it out of the car. I would do the timing belt, water pump, all idlers, cam o rings etc while it is out as well. Send us pictures of your knuckles if you leave it in please. Just kidding. GeneralDisorder
We don't do them in-car. It's too difficult to ensure proper surface prep and bolt torque. The biggest issue is not being able to adequately clean out and lubricate the block threads. Just makes it a pain in the a$$. GD
Mallory
OK, you convinced me! If it turns out I need new head gaskets I'll pull the engine. Thanks for the advice!
