Help Transmission issues no park. And Speedo way off

Just bought my first Subaru Outback 

excited to have it !  It has 190000 miles on it ,    I was diagnosing the torque bind.  I put a fuse in fwd. holder , I backed up literally like 10 ft and loud clunk lound grinding noises coming from underneath. !   I shut car off pulled fuse.    Now I don’t have park ! It rolls in park.  And everything still shifts fine but I start driving past 35 miles an hour and the speedo jumps to almost 90 miles per  hour and rpm goes to 6000 !  I’m lost.

Jack the front end up, spin the tire, and watch the different parts of the CV axle (Inner and outer joints, shaft, boots) and see if they all spin together. Could be a front diff, but FAR more likely that it's one of the axles.

 

Also, do not drive it like this. The engine revving up is a result of the transfer clutch slipping, it is not designed to take 100% of the load 100% of the time.

Often times precise auto transmission failure modes aren’t explained, they’re complicated systems.  Theres a small gear in the passenger side of the front diff that drives the Speedometer sensor. 

It sounds like:

A:  that small gear or associated components are compromised.  

B:  the shaft that passes from the trans to the front diff has clearance issues resulting from whatever is causing your other issues and it’s also causing problems in the front diff.

you said in the first post it revs up to 6000 rpms?  which is it.

And you said the axle was popped out of the diff......well, that would cause everything you described.

No, the spider gears in the diff still spin.  that's normal.

You can't test if the ring and drive pinion are spinning with both wheels in the air.

put one wheel on ground, one in air, trans in park.  Can you rotate the wheel in the air?  If no that means the pawl is intact.   If yes,  then the pawl is not stopping the ring and pinion from moving.
