archemitis
so im the only sucker i know working the day after the 4th so im bored... whats the fastest you guys have had an ea81 car. not nessecarily an ea81 engine. do the turbos go 100? or does the auto tranny not suport those kinds of rpms. i have 25.5 inch tires and an ea82 engine in a hatch, and i have had her up to 99, measured with a gps. straight road, no hills. the speedo was pointing almost straight down. i dont think my antenna is rated for that kind of speed, because its starting to point backwards. Scoobywagon
YOu aren't alone. I have to work today, too. Just later tonight. Anyway...had my wagon up to 90 once. Downhill, tailwind, foot on the floor. I WILL N E V E R even THINK about doing that again!
edrach
My Brat with the old engine, weber, and 5 speed dual/range has seen 95 on a flat without a tailwind. Standard tires and 13" alloy wheels.

IsraBrat
I had my at a 100 (on the speedo!) on a straight flat road, don't remmber about the wind and with a 175/14 tires. Oh it was with a dual carb ea81 Brat 4spd and I remmber that I was afraid that the car would fall apart (although the engine sounded real good)
GeneralDisorder
I had my '84 wagon to 110 or 111 once on the flat and level (between Salem and Eugene on I-5) - the digi-dash speedo goes that high and more (140 I think). It was 2WD at the time, with a Weber. The 3.7 diff and the 5 speed really makes the difference. Had 175's on it too (stock for a 2WD). My Brat has seen 95 maybe 100. The gearing is such that without a better cam, you don't have enough power in 4th gear with a 3.9 diff to really get past that 100 mark. dave valiant
I got my Turbo Brat to just over 85mph on the way to the midwest meet 2.That was on a nice straight flat stretch of highway foot to the floor.I'm not sure how accurate the speedo is because I was running 185-80-13.I think that is a 10% difference, and if that is correct it would have been about 93 mph. archemitis
with my 25.5s im supopsedley only 5 mph off at 65. so 65 is 70 i guess... did any ea81 speedos other than digi go past 85?
SuperRallyRoo
B4 I did the engine conversion on my wagon to n/a... With the ea81t engine I redlined in 4th gear which was well over 85mph. Was too affraid to put it in 5th. I was having enough trouble keeping it straight lol. And that was with a bad turbo and a poorly running engine. Now it won't go much over 80 slows to 70 up a hill the hatchback could go 85+ with the weber and 27" tires but now it can only do about 60 which is probably about 70. (has a 5spd D/r)
EA82Turbo
My ea81T tops out at about 170kph. Not bad but a want more!
Jibs
According to my speedo, I've had my stock Brat at 85 a few times before. It likes it I think sometimes, as I only realize it as I'm passing people and going, "why is everyone going so slow? Oh, wait!! Dang!"
beachbum
ive had my 85 brat going about 75,with its stock ea81,but that was downhill with the wind at my back:lol:
84Scoobaroo
I had my old red wagon up to 85+ on a cold winter morning (12:30am) with a little tailwind. Right about 5200-5300 RPM in 4th.
Hocrest
Just the other day I had my stock 86 Brat 4spd/DR to 93 mph (gps) on a very slight upgrade of the PA Turnpike.
Turbone
Before the AT went out on my 84 Turbo Coupe, I had it doing 86mph up a steep hill (to Bonney Lk). It holds the road well, but I'm not sure where I would take it to find its top speed It will definatly go over 100mph.
bratsrus1
Hey Rob This is Jerry, i will have to agree with you on that one because after i installed the 86 rx turbo 5 speed dual range tranny in my 86 hatch with the stock EA81. Damn.. 85 up 410 is a neat trick for almost any car with 4 cylinders.. especially when every time I think about trying it theres a cop sitting off to the right just as the highway turns and starts to go uphill.. PHATBRAT
I had my old gray BRAT up to 105 but it was downhill and floored
GeneralDisorder
Just as a compare, I had a Gen 1 (EA71) 78 wagon up to 85 MPH with an automatic. So all you EA81 types should be able to beat that at least..... even my lifted wagon can beat that. GD
archemitis
my two wheel drive hatch with the stock hydrolic ea81 5 speed will go as fast as my ea82 one, but it prolly weighs 2-300 less. the one with the 15 inch wheels is alot more stable at speed though
Flowmastered87GL
I only got the brat up to 80 or so... I havnt really touched the engine yet since it runs good but I didnt wanna push my luck not really knowing how old the hoses were (gonna change em when the lift is done) The RPMS werent maxxed but they were high enough... Had the 87 up to 103 before but had to slow down for traffic...
