4spd or 5spd? d/r or not?

Boards kinda slow again tonight so time for some more questions. Okay so im puttin an MT into an 84 turbo coupe that has a 3at right now... as if you didnt know. Should i go with the 4spd or the 5 spd? I hear 4spds are smoother annnnd im sure easier to find annnnd more reliable. But im missin an extra gear right? The car is going to be for rally and i hear the 4spd is geard better for this? Okay and then the next question... Dual range or ft4wd or none of em? How about as far as easiness of puttin em in? I think a lot of this is repetative and im sorry for that... just lookin for some other perspective thanks a million....

the gears in a 5spd are closer together, thats what u want for rallyin'. 4spds they say are better for mud type stuff with wheelspin. but what you want is 5spd for topping out, 4th and 5th are real close, keep it in the same rpm range between shifts,

I have never heard that the 4spd is smoother or more reliable.

I kow of very few people that have broken an old soob MT, whether it be 4 or 5 spd. Nor have I ever heard that the 4 speed is better for rally. Theres got to be some reason subaru used a 5 speed in their rally cars..

You are planning on rallyX?

I would use a FT4WD D/R 5 speed.. straight out of an RX.. which happens to be subarus old school rally car

But if you do what Calebz suggests on the FT4wd 5spd you need custom axles. CV of Ocala makes good ones but $120 each.

 

I would go with a 5 over a 4spd but you need a different rear driveshaft setup, the 4spd is more of a bolt in swap.

 

The 4spd's seem to have synchro problems that the 5's don't. Id be sure to avoid the 82 and older 4 speed as its geared lower in a gear or two and wouldn't be as good for you.

5spd D/R is the way to go on this. I was planning on doing it, just other things came up :brow: The driveline is the only thing that needs to be sent out, I think it needs to be lengthened. Not 100% sure on that tho, but someone told me that the 5spd D/R is shorter that the 4wd AT.

5 speed d/r is the way to go. With that you can have the engine in the power band no matter what speed you might be going. Best deal is to lengthen the drive shaft, but the two piece 5 speed drive shaft is a bolt in but involves mounting the center bearing carrier. You might check with ratty2subaru (Austin) since he has a complete setup to sell...working gearbox, driveshaft, converted shift linkage, and everything else that's needed. Also, the 5 speed seems to be more reliable. I've had four EA81 gearboxes fail over the last few years in 6 different cars; I haven't lost a 5 speed yet (knock on wood).

does anyone know the ratios for the dr 82 and the others, I hear there is a difference

 

I prefer my super 10, it is so nice in snow to shift between hi and lo, start in 1 lo work up to 4 lo, then 4hi, then 5 hi

 

also, when playing at the river bottom, go in fwd, when you see water, STOP IMMEDIATELY, shift into reverse low, and there you be free
