1979 Subaru DL starting issue

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. I have a 1979 Subaru DL that was sitting for an extended period.

Cranks, no start condition. A shot of starter fluid makes no difference. So, it would appear there's no spark. I also don't hear the fuel pump run when I turn the key to on (not sure how audible it should be). I checked the fuses by the driver door. One is marked Ign/Fuel. Swapped it with another, no change. Is there a relay that powers both the fuel pump and the ignition circuit? Where would you do from here? All the other electrical items seem to work (headlights, turn signals, blower motor, etc.)

I don't have anyone who can help me troubleshoot where the car is parked, so anything I try I'll have to do solo.

Appreciate any help.

Likely the brush(es) on the alternator have worn and not sending a signal to the voltage regulator which will power the fuel pump.

Factory manual suggests changing out both at the same time - alternator and v/r.

Take the pump off or in place just reverse polarity with jumper cables off the battery for just a second to clear it out and verify it powers up.

BTW you can use those jumper wires to run the vehicle. The pump will stop enough for driving when running but best to unhook when parked. Many of us have had to do this.

Good luck with it. I have new fuel filters - factory Subaru and other parts New Old Stock and great used too. “cashingmystuffin” on eBay , that’s me.

Thanks. Appreciate the response and made a note of your eBay handle for future reference.

I'll follow your testing suggestions. Would the alternator issue also effect the car not firing when starter fluid was applied?

No,Do a better spark check.

Does a test light on coil negative pulsate while cranking? If not,no spark.
