Ultimate Subaru Message Board

Recommended Posts

I just purchased a 99 OBW that came with a bug guard / hood deflector. Small problem was that the guard had only one of the two clips still present. I thought it'd be easy to buy an extra clip through Subaru but no dice (have to buy whole new guard). I'm loathe to use tape on my 'new' car (yet). I've called around and posted to web salvage yards but no dice there either.

Anybody know where I can get an extra clip (or two)?

The hood deflector is OEM and was installed at the time the car was originally purchased. I asked a couple of Subaru dealers about ordering the needed clip and that's where I was told (twice) that I would have to buy a whole new deflector.

where did you buy this hood deflector?

did you contact them?

they should provide you with the needed clip.

Since you JUST purchased it, I would go back to the salesperson and see if thedealer would at least split the price of a new deflector. Remind him/her that you purchased a car with what you believed was a complete deflector. The only other option I can think of is to look on the parts board here, or on eBay. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply janeiaz - but no can do. It was a private purchase so no recourse. Also no luck on the parts board or eBay.

Therefore I'm still hoping someone has a broken hood deflector with clips that they don't need...

They certainly protect the leading edge of the hood, and deflect smaller rocks and bugs at freeway speeds, but leaves and debris can also become lodged between the deflector and the the hood and cause corrosion or damage to the fininsh.

As for fasteners, you can an automotive outlet like Pep Boys for a piece of hardware that might work for this application. It's really hit or miss. Or, 3M also makes a velcro tape that works quite well.

Is there any evidence that these hood deflectors actually do anything? That is, do they actually deflect bugs and small rocks?

Just wonderin'.

I have still got chips in the windshield with em on other cars, but I like the looks of so they still have my vote.

As for the clips, I am assuming they are the attachment clips, and I would suggest autozone, or checkers for possible replacements, or if you were careful you could probably drill and put small bolts to make sure it would not vibrate or fall off. just my 2 cents

Thanks all for your replies - hopefully this will close this string.

Turns out one can buy the clips ($1 each) from a subaru dealer. Just happened to ask a new parts guys one day and he was like, "oh yeah, you can order those."

Happy ending despite all the time spent thinking about a $1 part.

I had the same problem on a new Subie. Go to a local hardware store and go over to the nuts / bolts section. Look in the clip boxes (there may be several). I used one that worked perfectly.
