Front fuel pump on EFI / EA82T ?

Recommended Posts

If a fuel pump fails , has anyone tried another pump mounted up in the engine bay?

I recall getting a mates turbo Vortex going by grubbing up a spare old Subie fuel pump up front - and boy !

dormant for 20 years and fully serviced before storage - did she sound sweet !!

I cannot recall if I ran a fuel supply up front or front pump pulled fuel from the tank.

But, you know, once she ran, the factory pump remembered what it was and continued to run the sweet ride on its own - even for its next voyage when a private museum collector bought her and her sisters, trucking the sisters, and choosing to drive the sweetie 1200 KMs to her new home

So, wondering if anyone has used a front pump as an emergency roadside fix......

Pumps are designed for various parameters..  Lift, pressure, flow.  The OEM ones are in back, don't have to do much lift.  A lot quicker for the pump to get ahold of fuel to move, rather than air when it's closer to the tank, and lower elevation relative to the fluid level.  It's all trade  offs in the various performance parameters and cost.

I’ve done a roadside EFI pump swap once or twice before...

It’s not hard unless you’re trying not to get dirty (or smelly from the fuel). I usually have a spare in the back since I off-road in some quite remote places - if you had to walk it could be a good day or two before you made it to a decent unsealed road, and sand saps energy big time! So it’s “cheaper” to carry spare parts like this, it’s paid off once.

Cheers

Interesting thought and option.  It will probably depend on how and why the current pump/fuel system isn't working.

Maybe the old pump was still operational enough to prime and aid the function of the new one.  or maybe the new one could do the trick alone.  i'm game to give it a try one day and see if it works.

The front fuel lines are easy enough to access to give it a try.  Just be careful with sparks and leaking fuel - extra custom wires, pump, clamps, old car, close to battery, enclosed in engine way....sounds a little risky.

The basis I used was my own GLTA original pump at age 20 liked a gentle belt from a hammer to get him going better pressure in the morning and ran fine each time until next morning again.

This pump in the Vortex must have just been a little stuck and needed a nudge, with resulting operation cleaning up components

I think so long as common sense is in use with correct fuel and electrical hook up, should be no safety concerns

Factory correct pump inlet being 12mm needs adapting to engine bay 8 mm

Just a bit unfair on front pump to pull fuel through dud rear pump.

Still, think I prefer an underbody mounted pump to one accessed by interior seat and panel removal found on many of today's cars with intank pumps
