18 yr old vehicle, the in tank portion (wiper plate? not sure what it is called) is probably dirty and/or worn out.

probably best to start using the trip odometer, reset at every fill up, learn how far one can go on a fill and pay attention to that instead of the gauge.

you can try adding some techron fuel system cleaner (or seafoam) to a tankful and see it that helps. it might, it might not.

So it appears on the 08 OB the fuel pump is integrated with the sending unit??

If that is the case, under the circumstances,  is the pump is still operative(?) just a failing sensor?

Dads hate to be responsible for daughter being stranded waiting for Darrell Darrell and Darrell Brothers Towing to rescue her.

lol, ok 12 yr old... what can i say.. long day.

what do you mean by "integrated"?

the pump and gauge sending unit have been a part of a single assembly for a long time... 27 is the fuel pump, 37 is the sending unit... together they are an assembly - #33...

Yes the pump will run, it is a different circuit.

There are two sending units. One on each side of the fuel tank. The FSM says to check both and the gauge and replace. You would have to remove them to check them. It does not mention the Body Integrated Unit shown in the diagram.

The diagram shows a micro computer feeding the Fuel Gauge. I don't know if it is part of the gauge or the combination meter.
