Whine while driving at higher speed

Recommended Posts

Hello again. A couple of weeks again I had something in my trans give out and it turned out to be a couple of the center diff bearings. So the other day I had all of my center diff bearings done and its back in the car but I'm still hearing a whine when I'm at higher speeds. It's not that bad and if I'm going about 70 and I let off it stops making the noise. I thought it initially was just the center diff bearings but its obviously not. It also sounds like its coming from right below the shifter and i have all the interior pieces around the shifter off the car.

its a 1993 legacy that was FWD but swapped to RWD for skids and stuff. I would agree with you but I have a custom one-piece driveshaft in the car. And while I wish it was that, the car made the exact same noises before when it had two-piece driveshaft. Im thinking in the worst case I just have a somewhat bad tranny and once I have the money and the time ill buy a new another.

Could be the rear output shaft bearings whining.

Or the bearing between 4th and 5th. This can lead to the gearsets moving and not lining up properly, ultimately ending in the destruction of the gearbox. You might have other signs of bearing wear of this manner - on light cruise at 60km/h or ~35mph in top gear it’ll slip out of gear. As it gets worse it’ll start happening in 4th too.

This is what we experienced with my sister’s high km gearbox in her Gen3 Liberty/Legacy.

We swapped it for a second hand gearbox that we took a punt on. The centre diff was shot - but you’ll be swapping that anyway for your RWD setup.

There was a guy on this forum from memory that made a bellhousing adaptor to fit a dedicated RWD gearbox to the EJ engine. I think it ran a Toyota or Nissan engine - can’t remember which one. It might be worth looking into.

you might be right. So far I haven't had any poping out of gears but if I go really aggressive on the gear shifts it makes a chirp going into 3rd. luckily for me, these old 5speeds that use cable clutches are really cheap so it shouldn't be too bad if I end up going the replacement route. Its definitely not that bad, the car drives perfectly fine its just more of something that's annoying and makes the car just a little annoying to drive around. realistically I don't have the time to really fix the issues until around January maybe a little earlier so as long as she can hold out that long I'm okay. but it could be that even though I replaced those bearings? the shop who did it told me sand down the slot where the output shaft goes( where the driveshaft would go onto the splines, not the splines themselves but the surrounding rim), I'm thinking maybe it could be that. i used some Scotch-Brite to rough it up but maybe I didn't do that enough.

Hey Jarsky,

What are you roughing up with scotchbrite?

You said the centre diff bearings were replaced, the ones on the output shaft are separate to the centre diff bearings. These are above and behind the centre diff.

And yes, if the rear output of the gearbox isn’t covered you can easily get dirt and sand in there. If the box sits around for long enough dust can be an issue too.

Could be a good idea to source a second box to sit and wait for January or to throw in if something does go bang. Could even do whatever centre diff mod you did to make it RWD, then it’s a drop in setup ;)

Cheers
