Is NGK really that good or just smart marketing?

Recommended Posts

Hi all. Just purchased four NGK Spark Plugs from PepBoy. Are they really that good or is it just smart marketing strategy? What about this Iridium tip? Has anyone done a professional test on it, comparing it to the regular copper tip and Platinum tip? Of those of you that already used it, does it make any difference in term of saving gas and all other things that NGK (or any Iridium makers) claims?

Thanks in advance!

I replaced the stock copper champion plugs with the NGK iridium plugs. Honestly i believe it was a waste of 28 bucks. It runs a little smoother, but power and fuel mileage was just as good with the cheapo champions. thats just my feelings on the matter...

FWIW, when I raced a VW Scirocco years ago, the Bosch and Champion plugs would begin misfiring after 20 laps in a practice session.

Switched to NGK's, no problems. They convinced me. That's all I use in my outboard as well - 200 hp fuel-injected Yamaha 2 stroke. Small boat, big ocean....

I use the cheap NGK plugs ($1 to $2 each depending on whether I get the V-tip or not). I've never had any problems with any NGK plugs I've installed in over 20 years and about a dozen cars (most recently 8 Subarus). Generally, I replace them at 30K miles but they look like they would go longer. I've never felt the urge to spend $5 or more per 'plug.

Iriduim plugs have less resistance to current compared to platinum plugs. And usually will equal a good copper plug but last alot longer. Tried Bosch plats in my 87 Brat and wife's former Mustang and both vehicles started missing. Never will try them again. Have NGK iriduims in my truck and like them though no noticable gain in performance, I tend to replace parts prematurely.

It seems like they actually make my car drink more gas! I think I can actually see the gas gauge moving! Help! What's the deal now? Possibly an oxygen sensor would help? Would it?

My old plugs are Bosch Platinum 4. Still saving them just in case these new NGK screw me up real bad!
