Lezbaru
Hi! I am back with more questions about my 85 Brat. This is a bit lengthy so thank you in advance for reading! I wired in a little amp (my original radio is broken in several ways but I kept it for aesthetics) for my audio and I initially used the original power cord from the car that the radio plugged in to, but noticed the power seemed to be inconsistent there. I specifically noticed when I turned on the heat in the car, the power cuts in that cord. I ended up cutting into the cigarette lighter power so not worried about powering the amp, but still concerned about that issue given a couple other things going on in the car. First: the radiator fan. When I got the car this has been grounded by previous owner so it was always on. Thought possibly the sensor was bad so replaced it with a better radiator and working sensor from my parts car. Reconnected it and it seemed to come on when the engine got hot (though waited until basically the red line to do so). However! Right after doing that I also started having some issues with the tach and the voltmeter cutting out and then randomly coming back on. Unsure if it’s actually related but it is a suspect coincidence. Have checked fuses and everything is good there. I literally just finished rewiring the amp so haven’t driven it yet to see if I have continuing issues, but did end up regrounding the fan because it didn’t seem like it was coming on consistently. The connector on there is pretty grody as well but it’s a little hard to get at so I haven’t gotten around to rewiring it yet. So my questions: Are these things all actually connected? Has anyone run into similar issues? I already pulled the dash and replaced the instrument cluster in the fall so I’m...really hoping the answer doesn’t involve doing that again, lol. Some googling has made me consider replacing the ignition switch but that’s about as far as I’ve gotten. Again, thank you for reading my novel and for any insight you can give, this forum has been so helpful to me on my Brat journey!
el_freddo
Go through and clean up all your earth connections - and find any that are not strapped down, get them sorted too. Your thermo fan should kick in at a bit above the half mark on the temp gauge. What sort of voltage is the alternator putting out?
