john in KY
Once again I am stumped when it comes to unplugging components. This particular ECU has an about 2-4 inch "lever" above the plug, which appears to be one gigantic connector, with an arrow imprinted on it. I failed to get the lever to move and am at a lose how to unplug the ECU. I assume any ECU from 95 through 99 will exchange.
idosubaru
I’ve never had any stick but you’re exactly right Turn the lever and the plug comes out. Install new one, plug in, turn lever Back. yes 95-99 just remember 99 Forester and Impreza and ALL 99 2.2 are Phase II. if you’re using a 2.2 ECU I’d stick with 95-98 2.2 and 99 Outback or legacy 2.5 onky. Not 2.2 legacy in 99. Edited April 26, 2021 by idosubaru
STEVEN BORNHORST
The last tab closest to the small end of the locking lever, push down it has a small ledge to hold the lever in locked position.
STEVEN BORNHORST
1995 ECU only works with 1995 cars.
wtdash
And '99 EJ25D ECU won't work due to Phase 2 Trans - if Automatic....tried one in my '96 and got a CODE, that I can't recall, but it was 'trans related' I believe.

That makes sense as '95 was voluntary OBDII, but the more interesting question is if 96-99 ECUs can be plugged in without messing with the wiring harness or re-pinning the plug?
