Can I replace '87 4WD auto with 2WD auto?

Recommended Posts

I have an 87 GL-10 1.8 4WD Turbo Automatic that went zing zang sizzzzz ker bang pow and sounded like it lost every tooth off everything that has teeth in the transmission. I have a 2WD transmission on hand that is supposedly good and pulled from a running car but all we got was that it was "from a mid 80s turbo wagon". A number on it is TA86K3G,FC-XW That mean anything? And the serial is 410091. I did searches but can't find anything to relate to either of those numbers. Can I conceivably put that in and take out the rear wheel drive shaft and expect to motor along my merry way and maybe somewhere down the road put a 4WD back in?

I don't guess there is any way to expect to be able to put the rear drive transfer case on this 2WD transmission?

Thanks for any advice.

Yes you can put the 2wd tranny in, and no you cant put the 4wd part on the 2wd part. But, it sounds like the front diff went out. If possible you might be able to replace the front diff with the one from the 2wd. I'm not 100% on this, I'm sure someone here will say yea or nea.

Thanks for the help and info Turbone.

I just found out the spare 2WD I'm thinking of putting in is from an '85 XT GL.

That would sure be swell if the differential from this 2WD trans would fit and replace the one on the 4WD that went bad. I'm a do it yourselfer and never had anything like that apart. Will it be easy to see that either it will or won't bolt together or is there more to it than that? (like gear ratios etc.)
