What legacy struts permit 225 60 16 Outback tires?

Recommended Posts

My 225/60/16 OB snow tires cleared my 2009 Legacy struts.

But most Subaru commentary says those OB tires won’t clear legacy struts.

These are definitely legacy struts it sits really low to the ground and I’ve installed them temporarily on my xt6 before.

Are they GT turbo struts ?

The prior owner installed a turbo GT hood and had the camber set to wonky angles so it would be no surprise to have non OEM struts

That's less than a 27" tire. Outback struts can pretty reliably clear 29s.

Now I'm sure the spring perch has moved a bit in 20 years (as early Legacies came with 14s and a 2009 with 17s).

My bet is on stock, or stock replacement. Turbo in that year came with a smaller diameter tire than a standard legacy (215/45r17 vs 205/50r17), so no reason to think they would have taller struts.

Thanks. I thought 225/60/16 didn’t clear legacy strut spring perches?

they don’t fit some EJ struts i tried to put them on years ago but maybe it’s just some older ones.

one person here suggests they don’t fit:

yeah.. a lot depends on the stock size the car originally came with...
I know from personal experience, that thru 1995 at least, the Legacy came with 14" wheels in stock form.. not gonna fit a larger wheel/tire combo.. Newer models, however, probably could.

might fit the larger wheel, but tire would have to be close in diameter to the stock 14" size to keep from rubbing.
