Ferox63
I have been looking at Timing belt kits for my Girlfriends 98 Legacy Postal with 2.2l. There are some kits with the old style tensioner and some listed with the new integrated tensioner. From the searching I have done it seems 98 should have the newer style Integrated tensioner and I will confirm that after removing the timing cover before I order. My issue is I want to buy an Aisin Kit but the only kits they list that fit the 98 Legacy EJ22e are with the old style tensioner. Does anyone know the correct part number for the Aisin kit with the integrated tensioner?
Numbchux
Off the top of my head, I thought '98 was the old style, but I'm not completely sure. Punch the VIN on www.partsouq.com to see what it came with from the factory. Best is to pull the cover and see. If it's the new style, try for a '99. Only difference should be the tensioner. idosubaru
98 is always new style unless it was swapped. Pull the drivers side timing cover tk check - 3 10mm bolts really easy You can order the bracket for like $25 and use whatever tensioner you want. Get the bracket new or used to match the tensioner. It attached to the engine with 2 12mm bolts. so if you ordered new style and it turned out to be old style because it was engine swapped previously or something then just buy the cheap bracket to go with it. Ferox63
Thank you for the info. I'll be pulling the engine at this point. The engine jumped timing due to a rotted belt. Scoping the cylinders showed valve contact on all 4 cylinders. Thankfully i have a friend who owns a machine shop so the challenge is getting it out and apart. Those external head bolts would make it the easiest Subaru head job to do insitu if you wanted to try to crank it out quick in the engine bay without pulling the engine. Remove lower 2 14mm engine mount nuts and pitch stopped and jack the engine up on the side you're working on to "tilt" that head up for easier access.
