SLG
Second message on this topic 98 Subaru Legacy auto 105,000 I am not a mechanic .... But owned a few cars ....and with YouTube can learn a lot. I live in cold climate and cars rust and potholes. Recently heard a noise that sounded like a cv axle going bad ...on turns. It was a combination of cv axle and a hung up calipers. I put up the message and got a response from two great people....the noise is suspension. I felt it was myself because it acts up with speed bumps ...... but the sharp turns confused me .....thinking cv. My very busy mechanic ...put on a new cv axle and wheel bearing. Noise returns after driving on not so great roads. My mechanic drove the car running on the lift ....not on ground ....sound came from the middle transfer case ..... he said that he does not repair transfer case. Repairs this year cv axle, wheel bearing , control arm , brakes a good $2,300. I am not a mechanic but being under the car a hearing the noise I thought that the ( thing that goes into the transfer case to operate the wheels from the the gears in the transmission should be replaced. It a horrible creaking sound after hours of YouTube ....I think tie rod As I said I am no mechanic....but trying to figure out if the vehicle is worth keeping ....I be glad to put a few more dollars to drive it a few months more. It seems that everyone on this message board has a lot knowledge..... I know nothing about cars ....but know enough it tires wear on outer edges suspension or aliment.... I notice that steering wheel is crooked and at times more play . Never vibration. Tie rods look easy and not expensive. Looking for some advice .. Would love to repair the car to be made safe. No intention of keeping it that long basic transportation. Outside of this suspension issue never had trouble with the car. Looking to find a trustworthy mechanic at a fair price that can resolve these issues. Any advice is appreciated.
idosubaru
It sounds like you need some good Subaru eyes to diagnosis it. The current shop doesn’t seem familiar enough to figure it out. And the info you’re giving us is hard to piece together. grab all the tie rods and vigorously shake them with all your weight and muscle. Do they have play or make noise? Describe the noise or symptoms very specifically with no additional details What is the sound like, when exactly does it do it or go away? Straight turning left or right coasting downhill idling uphil accelerating is it repeatable or not… Tires wearing poorly and uncentered steering wheel are probably alignment.
1 Lucky Texan
yeah, get different eyes on it. Hard to say if it's time to let it go. What would you get? an unknown used car?
el_freddo
Is it a rotating type sound when turning etc or just a knocking sound you’re hearing? Asking because if it’s a knocking sound it’s most likely shot front struts. The tell tale sign to confirm this is when driving over slightly undulating road surfaces you’ll hear the knocking Cheers Bennie
