dave valiant
I just got an 88 GL wagon,5 spd,2WD,tbi EA82.On my way to work there is an off ramp loop which I like to accelerate up as fast as my car will handle.Well the first time I took the wagon up it I noticed when I got the car off of the loop and on the straight stretch it would put out a Spy Hunter sized cloud of smoke. This is the only time I have noticed any smoke whatsoever from the car.Any one have any ideas of what this could be?I cant believe this is normal.I took my Brat on this same loop for almost two years everyday pushing it hard and never had a whiff of smoke.I know there are alot of differences between an EA81T and an EA82 but it just doesn't seem right.I have taken the loop at normal not pushing it speeds and get a tiny little puff.Any help would make me eternally gratefull.Thanks,Dave. calebz
Its the PCV SOA issued a recall for this problem in the 90+ loyales, but I have heard of some of the late 80s EA82 cars affected as well. I don't know the specifics of whats wronf, only that the PCV does weird stuff when accelerating and turning, like in an offramp/ onramp situation
78TurboBrat
not saying anything bad here, but i have a 87 gl wagon that has blown head gaskets, so i know its not running as good as it should, but i noticed that it had been over filled with oil, and when i made a sharp turn with it it put out alot of smoke, but when the car sits still not doing any wild turns or hard curves it doesnt smoke, or run hot or at least hasnt run long enough to get hot, just long enough to be moved around and maybe the occasional donut in the feild next to the house. So just check to see if you are by chance over filled. now how that would cause a problem, i dont know, but its the only thing i can think of that causes the wagon i have to look like a mosquito spraying truck until it settles down from a hard turn, Good luck. rayfordmachen
I have an 87 GL-10 and was coming home from work one day a couple years ago and as I crested a small hill, let off the gas a little bit and started down the other side I noticed this puff of smoke in my mirror and my heart sank, pretty sure I lost something in the engine since I'd never seen any smoke out of that engine. It kept on going though and over the next few days I'd get it again now and then and it got worse and worse over time. Long story short, it was a bad transmission vacuum modulator letting transmission fluid get pulled into the intake at certain engine/vacuum conditions (like letting off the gas after acceleration). I like to have never figured it out. I wonder if yours could be just barely starting to leak a touch. I think it's pretty common they wear out around 12-15 years. Bill90Loyale
Dave- Check out this thread. It's all there. I haven't bothered to do the PCV mod (yet), and don't know if I'll ever bother. It only effects me on hard uphill freeway merging situations, and I just take it slow and stay in the breakdown lane with my hazard flasher on. I think most motorists take one look at my old jalopy and assume that it's on its last legs. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/printthread.php?t=16162 Edit: If link above doesn't work, try this: http://home.comcast.net/~c.moe/pvc_mod.pdf
MorganM
Yep time to upgrade your PCV system. Basicly it just gets rid of those 2 wussy small lines and replaces it with one big fat line like the other side. I got what I needed for free at a junkyard off a Loyale (they already got the updated PCV hoses) All you need is the hoses and plastic fittings. rayfordmachen
Sheeze, looked back at the original post and see it's a 5 spd. Sorry for my diatribe about the transmission modulator. You don't have those on 5 spds do you? For some reason I was thinking Subarus were all automatics. (just kidding, really)
Scoobydo
The same thing used to happen to my 91 GL wagon at/tpi/4x4 EA82 only it would happen at an on ramp same place every day. A puff or cloud of blue/grey smoke would appear. I would be standing on it every day in this same spot to get up tp speed for traffic. The ramp had a slight incline to it. My 84 Brat never gives me these symptons anywhere. Are we in the Twilight Zone? Chongo
My '86 GL Wagon 4WD 5 spd did the same thing when exiting off the highway on a long loop and then entering a straight stretch....upon accelerating a big cloud of blue smoke would appear and then go away.......Had the Hitachi carb rebuilt and that took care of the problem.......like the carb was dumping fuel due to centrifical force around that long downward loop on the exit ramp.....hope this is another thing to consider......... Sorry, not really something to consider. The 88 from the original post and the 91 from the last post don't come with carbs. The PCV doing weird stuff on offramps is a known issue however. bajavwnsoobnut
yes there is a recall on that stuff and all it is is a new pcv valve some rerouted lines and also the valvecovers get a box around the inlet for the pcv vent system also cause of when you are making a turn the oil will slosh to the outboard head cause of centrifical force and get ram fed into the pcv inlet and then sucked into the intake system then burned in the comustion chamber you also get a pinging sound also the trick I used to do with my 91 Loyale 5sp 2wd was when I went around those types of cloverleaf type turns is to dive in and then let off (basicaly yanking the wheel into the turn and then letting off the pressure) so that the turn is not as constant as just going around the turn because you are just making small turns with a very small straight run instead of a big turn
