is it safe to saw this off?

Looks like a part of the wheel bearing. The center caps of my wheels won't fit, and I've been itching to saw this bad boy off:

 

 

Is sawing off the little metal protruding part sticking out a bad idea?

This is why they design 'hub caps' Real hub caps just cover that stub sticking out and your actual hub. What most ppl have are wheel covers that cover their whole ugly black steel rims; like those wal-mart spinners :cool:

 

I would get a neat hub cap for the center of your rims before sawing that off.

well i know less than morgan but what the hay,i dont see why u couldnt grind that down to the threads so u could still get the center nut on and off what could it hurt? im sure somebody will veto me:lol:

if you do cut that down, make sure that you leave the little hole for the cotter pin/ nail/ safety retension device that keeps the nut from spinning off if it becomes loose

that's the end of the axle, not the wheel bearing. i don't know that it would hurt anything to grind it down as long as you could get the castle nut off, but it would probably ruin any warrantee on that axle.

Not only ruin the waranty, but possibly weaken the CV Hub itself. What are you going to use to cut it? Whatever you use, be very careful, and i would probably remove the hub and do it on a bench or something instead of hunched over next to your car waving a dremel or something around.

 

I vote: no, leave it there.

i did the same on my s-10 but i used a small portable electric mini band saw meant for metal pipe and stuff

worked really quick and smooth then i dressed up the edges of the stud

so it did not have sharp edges to potentially start a crack for what ever reason

 

you can rent those little bandsaw's they are made by milwaukie hmm methinks thats spelled wrong

 

but don't cut out your pin hole.. thats bad

i have the same problem with those wheels on my RX... I just leave the little cap off. I'm thinking about maybe getting some spacers, to push the wheel out a bit.

If you feel the need to cut , do so....

 

Don't take it quite to the threads, and As others have stated It will void any warranty you may have on the axles.....That is there for 2 Reasons, To be a Pull point for the Proper Installation Tool, and To beat on when driving the axle out of the Hub for replacement......Think of these 2 things when trimming it down .....

me thinks that is the rear axle stub that he is pointing out cause Andrew had that same problem with his T-wagon and it should be ok to knock off like a 1/4-1/2 in just as long as it's not all the way back to the threads

Use a portaband, cut it stright as a arrow, and file the edges smooth...and onyl cut to about 1/8 of an inch to the threads...dont cut on the threads.
