Tie-rods on '98 Legacy L Wagon EJ22, A/T

Recommended Posts

Well while hunting for a heater core for under $250. I realized that the tie rod ends on my 1998 Legacy L wagon, EJ22, A/T, 133k are shot. When the car is not running and I turn the wheel in either direction I get a creaking sound from the front end. The Beck-Arnley replacments are $55 a peice and do not have Zerk fittings!!! Anyone know a better option??

Yes, It makes a creaking sound when you pull into a tight parking space also!!

I replaced one on my 91 Legacy, but that was because I screwed the old one up.

$55 for aftermarket??? The OEM ones are like $40!!

Does it make the sound when the car is running? If not I wouldn't even worry about it...

*jack the car up

*remove wheel

*grab hub assy and try to move it up down and side to side

if it moves, you need tie rods...

outer tie rod ends are $39.96 each side from allsubaru.com

hope this helps and let me know if we can help

Well I went for NH inspection today and he confirmed my fear drivers side, inner tie rod has to much play in it. That is why my steeing wheel in shaking above 65MPH. Only one I found from subaruparts online is $65. Anyone found a inner tie-rod for less? How had is it to replace, I know I will need a alignment after words. I have 150k should I replace the inner and outer tie-rods on both sides now?

1stsubaruparts.com has genuine subaru inners and outers for 30-35$ a piece. I'd do it all at once. You'll notice a bigger improvement in the steering of your wagon and you'll only need to do the alignment once.

On other cars I've found complete rod and end assemblies as cheap as ends separate. Much easier job that way. Does anyone sell the assemblies for these cars?

Very good idea even at $36 a pop a complete over haul of the front end steering parts is $145!!! We need assemblies!!

not to highjack or anything,but....

what's would cause a knocking sound when i wiggle the steering wheel back an forth.sound comes from front-end.mainly with engine not running, can hear it more that way.

could that have anything to do with the tie-rods?
