ManYaiK
YO, I was wondering if a turbo 5speed 4x4 tranny will work on my spfi? I know the axles are different, but I can use those turbo axles on my car, right? Thanks!!!
baccaruda
yep! you'll need the vacuum gadgets to activate the 4WD though. above the master cylinder, two black solenoids with gren plastic snouts for the vacuum lines, which should to to a 5" disc thingy on the trans. wire it up and use the shifter from the turbo car, or use another switch. take the shifter linkage too because sometimes those are different. exhaust to trans mount might be off too, no biggie. TROGDOR!
You'll need to swap the rear differential too. Your car has a 3.9, the turbo trans is geared for a 3.7. Install the trans without swapping the diff, and when you engage 4WD everything will go kablooey. So... you'll need the trans, axles, and diff. If you're converting from an automatic, you'll need quite a bit more...
Free Range
the car will be totally gutless, turbo transmissions are geared for taller shifts, b/c turbo = more power, so later shifts. by all means go with with a 3.90, preferably a dual range 5spd, myself and a few others run 3.90's in turbo cars, closer ratio shifts = more torque to the ground. In my opinion the only reason to run a 3.70 trans is if it had fulltime 4wd and you wanted only to drive/race on the street. without too much work any trans from a 80-89 roo will fit, but do yourself a favor and stay with 3.
