JLDT
Hi, My 86 Subaru is not keeping it's fluids in so well so I am after a full gasket set - does any one know where I can get one and about how much it would cost? It is a Ea82 Carborated engine. Thanks all
MilesFox
as far as head gaskets, get tha napa victor brand. you can get the who;le set(for ALL ea82, enough gaskets for a block teardown) you can be more economical and get the head gasket set, and then get the engine seals separate(so you arent buying excess gaskets) the full set at napa is almost 300 bones, but the head set (head gasket/valve job) is i believe 135. it should have the intake gaskets included. JLDT
Sorry for the long delay - thanks for the info - I don't need to do the head gaskets and would like to avoid that if possible. What can I do for gastkets and seals with out doing the head gasket? Is there a kit out there for that? Thanks
WJM
Not really....I can assemble a list of gaskets tho. what gaskets do you need?
GeneralDisorder
There is a LOT more gaskets than you think. Likely you only need about 5% of what you would get in a full kit in order to stop your leaking. Zero in on what exactly is leaking and fix that. Oil pan - Valve covers - Cam seals - front and rear mains.... etc. Buying an entire set is silly if you don't intend to remove the heads even. Personally, I would do the HG's on general principle if you are yanking the engine to do other seals. I like the Fel-Pro ones myself, and when they only cost about $20 each for the HG's, it seems like good insurance. GD
JLDT
I was under the impression that original head gaskets would hold up better than anything that you could put in later. Is that true? This car is kind of a character. When I first picked it up I got it for 500 cause the defrost didn't work. After alot of time and taking the dash apart I finally discovered that some dipstick had done a tune up and not hooked up the vacume system correctly. Anyway, I have a feeling that this car has been wrecked and rebuilt - I could be wrong. the paint is kind of orange and red. The hood and left are orange and the right and back are red. With that in mind I think that it may have a newer engine in it so therefore I don't want to mess with the head gaskets if they are only a few years old. Anyway, Would it be better to do the HG's or just leave them until it is neccesary?
GeneralDisorder
Do whatever you like - you already have my opinion on the situation. As for the dealer HG's being better..... I seriously doubt that. Fel-Pro is a very trusted name in gaskets. Not to mention they have 20 years of continued improvement upon their products that the OEM gaskets don't have. I put Fel-Pro's in my EA81, and less than 2k miles later lost ALL of my coolant on the freeway (blown heater core hose). The needle was pegged. I drove another 2 miles this way till I could pull off into a parking lot - my speed continued to drop due to pinging. By the time I stopped, the engine was pinging so badly from predetonation that I couldn't maintain 30 MPH, and the engine was smoking (cooking the oil and sludge off the block). After it cooled I repaired the hose and refilled the coolant. NO damage. I've put another 5k on it since that happened, and not a single drop of coolant has leaked.
