am i screwed? obsolete parts!!!

Recommended Posts

ok i pulled my tranny out, because a 5 dollar seal is leaking. (the oil seal for the shift rod, where it enters the tranny. the "shift-shaft" seal.) and well i finally got arround to calling subaru, and they said this part is "obsolete, discontinued the car is too old" even though i just bought a oil seal for the tranny output shaft a few weeks ago from them! now if SUBARU wont carry them, as well as every auto parts place i can think of, what the hell am i supposed to do?? It just doesnt make any sence!! this would mean that any car using this seal is trash as soon as the seal wears out. arrgh. Help? Suggestions?

the seal brand is NOK, and the part # is ARO677G, the "O" is either a zero or an O.

ive put in a request at http://www.mspseals.com/ and so maby they can help. it just really irritates me that super kick ***** cars like ours dont get any respect, people just expect them to dissapear, so they can make room for....god forbid,...neons.:mad:

thanks a bunch all,

dig around in the yella pages for a bearing supplier...

usually they carry seals too, if you can get a number off the old one

it will make your search much easier

ok ill give that a shot tomorrow, thanks

actually craig, everyone told me that as well, so i dropped the tranny got the tail end off and found out it pops out the front. i laughed histarically, then got mad, but either way it wouldve been mucho harder if i had to do it with the tranny still in. so, in conclusion, it is easier to drop the tranny to replace it, BUT the seal does not have to slide in through the inside, it just pops in.

there i just unbusted anyones buble who was dreading that.

If you can get to the seal that easy, then get one from a junk yard.....

The real fix for this is of course to swap to a 5 speed D/R....

As for junking our old cars because of a seal - that will never happen. I'll just start modifying to use newer Subaru or other brand parts. I'll use EA82 stuff till it dries up, then I'll start canabalizing EJ cars. And of course I buy up parts cars when I can find them cheap.....

Just bring it to any place that carries any kind of seals and such and match it up if you have to. I am sure that there is something out there with the same size/type seal. From forklifts to washers and dryers, something has it. Try looking at seals from other autos. Go to NAPA with the old seal and tell them you need another one just like it. Let them do the work........

well GD, the ******* arround her decided to turn my "AA PULL-YOUR-PART" into just a regular junk yard so taking apart whole parts, such as trannys, isnt allowed.

well i was being a little crazy saying that well have to junk the cars becasue of a seal but we will have to junk the trannys if we cant re seal them anymore.

as for the tranny swap as stated above i will be doing a driveline swap, (i have an ea71 so 5 spd alone is out of the question) but i dont know when ill be able to do it, because in arizona i dont fine soobs for 10 dollars here and 50 dollars there, cars are expensive here, or are all takin down to mexico.

im still lookin for a donor car. or EJ parts to complete the swap.:brow:

ill check them out thanks subiemech85.

PHATBRAT, im sure ill find it like that, but most of the autoplaces here hire kids who dont know anything and dismiss you if you ask for help or imply that they should work, and you generally you need to be bilingual to get any info from them.

anyway thanks all for the help, you just dont realize how lucky you are when you dont need to search for parts. argh.

thanks,

tyler j

Yeah, I know what U mean, Subawoohoo. I need the shift linkage boot that seals the undercarige from the interior.....it don't exist anymore. If U get that looney mexican who asks the same question 4 tmes at the dealer parts counter, look out! He said that the t-stats are differant between 86 and 87! DUH! They're the same blasted part! For crying out loud! :banghead: Gimme Gentry Ford and Subaru in Ontario, OR. He knew Subarus like the back of his hand.

Yeah - it sure does help having tons of parts cars availible. Heck - I have a great little Subaru dealership about 3 miles from my house that has a couple master techs working the parts counter. They have been there since shortly after the begginning of time, and are really helpful sometimes. One of the guys even owns an 82 GL wagon. They love to see my lifted wagon or my Brat, and lately they have been giving me wholesale prices.....

Your 80 hatch, 3at, right?

I just looked it up...looks liek some kind of outter seal and an oring past that one.

BOTH are avalible, 41 of the outer, and 3 orings from Atlanta, my local warehouse.

Price on each....about $2 each....although i might could do better once I investigate.

Otherwise, if its a 5spd....its P#806718010, it goes for $5.24, and there are 68 of then left in the country. Dude, yet another SUBAUR dealer who doesnt want to help you out lied....they might not stock it, we dont either...but they are avalible from the warehouses. Its certinly an ACTIVE part number, and does not look to be gone/obsolete'ed for a long time to come....i can have this part to me tuesday if you call me today before 430pm eastern time.

no WJM its a 4 speed, 4wd tranny. it is just one oil seal that is for the "shift shaft." i think its only this one seal. ill try posting a pic that'll clarify.

if you can look it up, i also could use the same type of oil seal but for the 4WD shift shaft. as well as the gasket for the tail end of the tranny. thanks a bunch bro. ill PM you but i cant call, i dont have long distance on my home phone.

SWEET! Im picking up buisness....

PM me monday morning, so that when I get in...i have a real excust to be doing old skool stuff....

I can say...Dude, im swamped with SUBARU orders.

Ok, i DID by accident, lok up the shift shat...there are plenty of those left at about $3....the extension housing gasket...i didnt look that up, but its in the same FIG as the seals, so when i go back to get the seal numbers, i can get the gasket.

At some point, we need to email and I need to get your info so i can get this stuff comming on the tuesday order.
