Scoobywagon
I'm a hard core computer geek during the day, so out of a need for a computer related project (and to make use of a really neat computer that my wife wanted me to throw out due to lack of use, I've started compiling a database of subaru part numbers and equivalents from other manufacturers. There really isn't much to it, yet, but the goal is to eventually have a reasonably complete database for Subaru parts interchangability, along with notes on the precise differences between parts (i.e. SAE hardware instead of Metric, required mods or fab work, etc.). Does this sound like something others would like to take part in/have access to?
beachbum
sounds good to me.... does that mean ull want emails on part #`s we come across? or what?
Scoobywagon
I guess I'll just put it this way... if you have a list of equivalent part numbers (maybe you've found an obscure seal that Buick uses on their genuine calfskin bivalve extruders), drop me an email containing a description of the part, the OEM part number (if available) the manufacturer of the new part, the manufacturer's part number and the application for the newer part. If I find I need more, I'll let you know. I've got my own collection of data, which is pretty small, and I'm modeling this thing around that smallish collection. When I get it working, along with a nice web-ified application to make that info readable, I'll put it up on my website.
subawoohoo
that sounds rather nice, i myself am in a pickle right now looking for a part that is "hiding." but is this list totally needed? i know theres been a little uprising of people looking for obsolete parts but is it really that serious?? is there enough to sound an alarm. if it is that would be great! actually nevermind all that, go right ahead becasue if its not needed now, by the time you compile a nice list, it will be needed! ill send any stuff i can your way. tyler

beauregaardhooligan
An excellent idea! Alternatives are always good.
bajavwnsoobnut
I agree too that's why I posted earlier about a database or something that is a crossreference for parts cause it's like the halfshafts on my 76 are from a z car and so I ordered a catalog from someplace that sells restoration/performance parts for Z cars and was looking through it and found other parts that look like they would work

Vegablade
i have looked at a few books at my friends part store and it shows some parts that are interchangeable but a huge list would be awesome.

WagonsOnly
Gen II/EA82 people might not need it now...but in ten years we'll all be in the same boat. If we start on this now and keep it current it'll be worth its weight in gold. The 360 club did the same thing, by the way (on paper only, though)--all the brake and roof gasket retrofits are in the Book of Reprints. It's truly invaluable. TheMeatWagon
Hello i am from Slovenia(Europe) and i will try to find some data for you from european cars, if you like. Hey now this could be useful.... conversions between countries too... like them using metric etc.? Couldnt this be a bit useful?
beauregaardhooligan
Welcome to the board, Nebivedu! That would be great! I suspect there are parts available overseas that we can't get here. Although shipping might be prohibitive, options are always good. BTW, what kind of Subaru do you have? Got pix?

Scoobywagon
Haven't had any emails or PM's with any info yet. Hoping that's not due to lack or interest. BUMP!
Scoobywagon
Just bumping this one up again. Haven't had a lot of time to really work this thing, but I'm getting there. Still needing some information to populate the database with so I can get some testing done before I start letting you guys beat on it. Bumpity BUMP! carfreak85
I remember someone stating that cavaleir rotors were a match for an XT6 or something. Anyone else remember this?
Snowman
That would be incredibly helpful! I'll try to dig up the part number for the shallower oil pump seal that fixes leaks caused by a worn oil pump shaft.
heartless
I think it is a great idea! probably wont be much help with info, but would sure love to benefit from the data!!

It's truly invaluable. Ahhh! The Book of Reprints <----Lightning flashes and thunder sounds. Sounds important like you'd expect Moses to be carrying it around with tablets. Sounds like a good idea to me. Why don't you send your small 'database' to someone or post it up here or something? Please! Just in case a virus hits your computer or something crazy. We'd have a second resource. Not that something like that would ever happen to you. *cough*

Scoobywagon
The only things in it right now are an all-aluminum replacement radiatior from Performance Radiator (which doesn't work NEARLY as well as it sounds) and Front CVs from a company whose name I forget at the moment. I'm thinking about hitting up my local dealer for a complete parts list for every model from 1980 to 1985. That'll give me a complete listing of EVERY part of an EA-81 car. Then I'll move on to the EA-82 cars. That would take quite a while, but would result in the most complete listing of OEM parts available. Then all we'd have to do is get part numbers for aftermarket replacement and upgrade parts. Any volunteers to help do data entry?
maximumBRAT
This is an awesome idea, i am in full support. i can't help you a whole lot in interchangable parts due to the fact that all i've ever aquired were un-numbered used parts. Some day this won't be for me, so a back up list is an excellent idea. Right now, i cannot help with data input, but if you would like my help come december or beginning of next year, let me know. i have to put in too many hours at my job until then. But awesome idea!
